Perspective on Health Care: Health Care Experience Health Care Experience Information from the Introduction to the Health Professions, chapter one, which applies to professional experience would be the advancement of technology and the change in health care philosophy. In my experience the advances in Health Information Technology (HIT) have created positive outcomes to the patient experience. With the focus on patient-centered care, the use of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) allows healthcare providers to collect, store, retrieve, and transfer information electronically (Cliff, 2012). Additionally, the change in philosophy that health care is a right that everyone should have (Stanfield, Cross, & Hui, 2009), has also changed the practice of requesting health coverage information upon arrival to the Emergency Department, which I work. This change in philosophy and the advancement of technology by using EMR’s are two major changes I have encountered professionally in my 15 year career. The historic changes in healthcare will always affect healthcare professionals. The changes will affect everyone from a greeter in the Emergency Department, the registration team, nurses, and doctors. In my professional role I have been a witness to how health care has developed, implemented, and maintained the use of EMR to implementation of insurance verification after a physician has seen the patient. Some ways health care changes have affected my role is the focus on patient and family centered care. Patients presenting for emergency treatment are most concerned with the patients needs. By requesting insurance information on arrival, families are often made to feel as though they will be mistreated if uninsured or if insured through government issued health coverage, as opposed to private health coverage.
