Personal Narrative: Stick Shift Car

Imagine getting behind the wheel for the very first time. You climb in, sit down and get seat belted; once you are situated, put it in drive and get ready to ease away from the curb. Before you start going three different adults in the car start telling you what to do next, all that runs through your mind is “Let me do this myself!” even though you know they are saying it for your best interest. Getting your permit and driving with an adult is hard. Now that I have been driving for months it seems like a piece of cake, until my sister wanted me to try to drive her Honda Civic which is manual car. I buckled myself in and made sure everyone else was too, just in case. My sister told me to take my left foot and push the very left peddle in as far as I could, but along with my right foot on the brake then start the car. After I had my feet settled, she showed me how to put it in first. Now came the multi- tasking, I let off the brake and started giving it gas while also slowly easing off the clutch. I was pretty sure that I was doing it right until the car started jerking back and fourth, I knew this was not good, but had no clue how to stop it. My sister started screaming for me to push the clutch in, but I could barely hear her over Monica’s laughing. The car stalled and that was my first failed try on trying to drive a manual car. I felt like an idiot but this was all a part of learning. I started the car back up but this time I let off the clutch slower and gave a little more gas. The car actually was moving! I drove diagonally across the parking lot until my sister told me to hold in the clutch and slowly ease onto the brake. I was so proud of myself that I got the car to actually move and even stop without stalling. I practiced getting into first a couple more times and decided I still was not ready to take it into traffic. I was satisfied enough with driving in a parking lot, but definitely realized that was not in any way,
