Personal Leadership Reflection

In week 4 of Non-Commissioned officer academy (NCOA), I was told to reflect on myself, to “raise the bar”. In order to raise the bar, I needed to know how high my bar was set. After reflecting, I feel that I have actually found some areas to improve upon. My current state as a leader, I feel, is genuinely pretty decent. The feedback that I have received from my supervisors, peers, as well as subordinates is that I can communicate well by actively listening and actually take time to learn what actually is affecting my Airman. For example, if I need to discuss an issue with a subordinate, I will try and find a quiet room to make sure they are comfortable as well as make sure that they are given my fullest attention. Currently I was not aware that there were multiple styles of leadership that produced different results. To label my leadership style now, it would be more of a transactional type; I would tend to have someone work for me in order to get “X” reward. Now that I know that that may only sometimes work, I have the knowledge to become a more transformational leader type. On the other hand, there is another aspect that plays a part in what leader you have to “transform” into. By being flexible cognitively, in three to five years, I will “scan my environment” (Course 15) to asses how my work center and subordinates are. Meaning, do they respond more to rewards? Is it an extreme scenario that requires me to take a more of an authoritative approach? By properly assessing my surrounding, subordinates and peers, I can change and adapt my leadership
