Personal Essay on Learning Styles

Learning styles are different from one person to the next and seem to develop in each of us completely random. There are many articles and texts discussing the subject of learning styles, but they vary and change as much as the styles do. I am going to share with you my personal views about my learning style; along with the two test that were taken by me to see what my learning style supposedly is. I will cover the results and finally discuss my views on what those results say. There was a time when I was younger I believed that the best way for me to learn was a hands-on approach. I am currently working on my BS in Fire Management and if you knew me personally that would make complete sense because I have 15 years of Fire Service under my belt. I choose my degree for one simple reason. I wanted to show my daughters that education is very important. Now you’re probably wondering, “What does this have to do with your learning style?” It’s not the degree that would have anything to do with my learning style, but the method by which I am earning my degree. I have chosen to earn my degree online. Yes, that’s what I say. The guy that has admitted earlier that he believes he is a hands-on learning is earning his degree with no hands-on classes; just reading and writing. The following two test I told will show two completely different results to support my views on learning styles. The first test I took was the Learning style inventory by Bixler B. (2010). The test consisted of 24 questions that appeared to be aimed at specific learning styles. You were given the three choices of seldom, sometimes, and often. By the questions being asked and the choices provided I already knew what learning style the test was going to assign me.
