Don’t get me wrong, working, as an RN is very fulfilling and a blessing but I felt the need to go even higher. Pursuing my graduate study to earn my MSN will assist me with career advancement in the future, salary increase and also continue education to enhance my skills as an RN. Short term and long term goal My short-term goals would be to successfully complete this 3-week course and to improve my communication skills both in writing and verbally. My long-term goals would be to do exceptionally well in my Masters of Nursing program and hopefully work in an ICU setting so that I can gain the experience to and become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). In doing so, nurses must be care-givers and educators - providing the necessary information, skills and knowledge, to their patients to allow for self-nurturance, well-being, and growth. I started my journey in the field of nursing two years ago. My personal values, combined with the strong desire to help others influenced me to enroll in the Licensed Practical Nurse program. This career path has provided such great opportunities to help others, and has allowed for my own personal growth. I am continuously looking for new and great ideas to better the field of nursing and the ultimate goal of helping those in need.
I believe by achieving this goal it will help me to become a better student and employee. I know that in my career path as Registered Nurse I will encounter communication methods each and every day that will require me to get outside my comfort zone. This discomfort is something I have to divide and conquer
The hospital had a hard time retaining employees and one motive for the class was helping new nurses feel more comfortable and helping us have meaningful, fulfilling employment. In this class we learned about a lot of things but we learned about Julia Brenner’s theory and it has always since stayed with me. I now work in the recovery area of a much larger hospital and have worked in several departments. I have gained a lot of great experience and I have seen my growth described by Brenner’s model. Most importantly though, is probably the fact that I borrowed ideas from that class and from Brenner’s model and have instituted parts into the orientation of new staff-members within my current department.
As I reflect over my three goals, you will understand how each goal has helped me to become a more competent nurse, a better leader and a better advocate for my patient’s. In agreement with Barnes (2010), “Reflection after a clinical day gives students a greater insight into their feelings, and in essence gives them more confidence so they can continue on with their clinical experience.” Before my co-op experience, I felt that my behaviors, skills and attitudes were excellent, but after reflecting upon each shift, I found many aspects in nursing that I could improve on. Due to my experience in the course, I provide more thorough assessments, I utilize EBP more often, and I reflect upon my strengths and weaknesses and what areas need improvement. I have also become a more outspoken nurse and participate in different leadership roles. One thing I’ve learned from reflecting is that you find many things that could use improvement and it’s up to the nurse to initiate those changes in order to improve patient outcomes and
The challenge of entering into a vigorous program such as DNP will allow me to continue to enhance my skills and help me reach my career goal as an APN. I have what it takes to succeed based on my nursing and critical care experience. I want to continue to grow in nursing profession where there is learning, growing and giving back. During my time as a nurse, I have learned a lot about my strengths, grown professionally, and acquired a strong interest in special needs and emergency management. This particular focus, as well as the balanced theoretical, practical and academic nature of the DNP program is especially attractive to me, given my range of experience and interests.
In the course of the years I have practiced nursing, I have had to learn new technologies, expand into different areas and grow. Now as the most experienced nurse in my unit, I use these same principles to help newer nurses develop their own practice. Sometimes when I have felt frustrated at a lack of knowledge, or competence, it helps me to take a moment and think about where in the 5 stages of development is this nurse. I know that using this theory as the key to my practice has had a prominent role in my own growth and in the role of mentor and preceptor that I have played. I believe that like art and medicine, nursing is a practice.
However, I want to higher my educational level in nursing. I believe that going back to school to get a BSN it will give me more career opportunities and make me better prepared to meet the patient needs on a higher level. The BSN degree will give me the opportunity to become a nurse manager while continuing school for my MSN in ARNP. The responsibilities of the nurse manager will be to perform leadership
Nursing education has been radically reformed; both in theory and practice to meet up-to-date demands which comprises of rapid technological advancement, cutting edge research and knowledgeable patients who according to Mark, W., and Stanton, M.A. (2002) are
