Perpetual Corruption Humanity has been faced with so many challenges in our history, but perhaps none so troubling and menacing corruption. Countless millions of people have fallen victim to this virus. It has spread its tentacles to virtually every aspect of life ranging from the holy places to supposed institutions that are to seek the welfare of the weak and down trodden. Corruption has spared no one, it makes it normal for a few privileged persons to milk the cream of society and leave the rest of the people to suffer in abject poverty. Corruption has never been new phenomenon, in fact it has been around ever since the first man and woman was created. What then is corruption? Why has it been so difficult to put a halt to this, once and for all? What are the reasons if any why corruption still seems to be flourishing despite all the efforts being made towards its eradication? These are but a few questions we intend to explore and hopefully get a better idea on how to at least minimize this disease. In its simplest sense, corruption may be defined as an act of bribery or misuse of public position or power for the fulfilment of selfish motives or to gain personal gratifications. It has also been defined as "Misuse of authority as a result of consideration of personal gain which need not be monetary". Legally corruption is defined as "use of public power for private advantage in ways which transgresses some formal rule or law". Corruption in present times has spread over the entire society as a cancerous disease in all forms. The most common forms of corruption are taking of bribes (money offered in cash or kind or gift etc), nepotism (undue favour from holder of patronage to relatives), misappropriation (using the money of other people for one's own sake), and patronage (undue or wrong support by people in position to friends and family members and favouritism).
