Summary of English-Lueck’s observations on the family The home front is a conglomerate of technological devises which cultivate our very lifestyle at home and work sometimes merging the two. It’s because of our advancement in technology we are more easily accessible which is a pro and a con. For our family communication, we are able to look in on one another instantly with our cell phone or PDA. However, this has also created a false sense of security and the ability to plan things as they happen rather than plan ahead. New sets of rules within the family are established as punishment from these technologies.
In her essay “Lest We Think the Revolution Is a Revolution: Images of Technology and the Nature of Change” Cynthia L. Selfe claims commercials that advertise technology show images and powerful stories about social context that “we” as Americans recognize, that aren’t necessarily true for everyone. In this essay I am going to discuss the narratives used in commercials to advertise technology. One popular narrative which is often portrayed in commercials is the parent being away from their child and using technology to connect. In my opinion this portrayal is not myth. There are many parents who travel because of their jobs.
Although the computer is fantastic in many ways and has helped improve civilization’s way of living, have people all over the world come to rely on this device too much? Computers make life far easier and many people living today probably could not function if they were sent back in time before computers were created. Although people are just taking advantage of the presence of this technology, people need to realize how to use it responsibly and not to overuse it. Computers let people communicate with each other in the blink of an eye. This revolutionary way of communication can help build relationships and bonds between people.
This vision reflected in their extensive hiring practices. * Their strong culture paved the way to become a marketable brand on its own in the industry resulting in talent pool augmentation. * The biggest advantage posed by their strong culture was the ease of buy-in among the new and current employees which resulted in better assimilation and integration of their core principles and vision. The culture was pervasive at all levels of the organization that buy-in was evident in a short span of time. * The culture at Zappos made it possible for the management to delegate and share responsibilities among the peers.
In the essay, Turkle explains that the internet and BlackBerry phones are absorbing all of our time and attention. She says these media devices reduce our natural ability to form relationships and be social with one another. When people are together, they now divide their attention between the person they are with and their Blackberry or mobile device.Turkle stresses that the growing trend of constantly carrying a cell phone can have a negative impact on children. They no longer have to experience being completely alone or finding their way because parents are on speed dial to help them in an instant. The reading Me Against the Media, by Naomi Rockler-Gladen, addresses the issue of naturalized consumerism.
There are so many tools to work with and things we are capable of doing. We can virtually talk to anyone anywhere at any time. One plus for the family computer is instead of the being glued to the TV for hours, we are now being productive on the computer. We are doing things that force our minds to keep thinking and not just zoning out. The introduction of computers to our family life helps us come together and spend more quality time together.
“Is Google making us stupid?” Google has been part of people’s daily lives. It becomes more valuable and important because of the things that it can contribute to many individuals including myself. People way back years ago would search through dictionary articles and encyclopedia those words, phrases, and even look for deeper meaning of things they do not understand or look for people they are not familiar with. But today’s generation would just type the word, phrase or sentence to the Google search tab and will automatically get the meaning or the desired answer to the question they have. We can clearly see how Google has evolved the way people live and the lifestyle they have as compared to the previous generations.
Technology is taking over people’s lives. It is not surprising that more people become completely dependant on this technology every year. We depend on devices to do what we used to do for ourselves. Although these tools make life easier, they are not really necessary even though we believe we cannot live without them. Over the years technology has been developed to make out lives easier.
The new era of technology and its advancement have indeed removed even today’s professionals from “regular face-time conversations”. Technology has changed the way we, as humans live. It is unquestionable about it detracting professionals from actual face to face conversations. These electronic devices have totally changed our understanding of the way things work, and has changed the way we interact with one another. These methods which were once opposed, has now been welcomed into our business out of convenience and “time vs. money”.
Why do we check our smartphones hundred times a day? Do we even know what the word “social” means in this modernized era? The word Social, according to dictionary.com means seeking or enjoying the companionship of others; this firmly implies face-to-face interaction. Nevertheless, this definition conflicts with today's perception of social networking, in which we interact mainly with screens rather than
