Patriotism In America

Every citizen living in the United States who wants to call themselves an American must be patriotic. Patriotism is the love and devotion to a country for no other reason than being a resident there. Being loud and proud of being a part of where you come from is an important part of being an American. “The frontier, as a reality and as a symbol, is what has shaped the American way of doing things and the American sense of what’s worth doing” (Shames, 88). What Shames is saying, is when Americans explored the new western frontier they had no motivation or way of knowing what they were going to run into. Over many years of this ideology taking affect Americans have become very self-indulgent. Where we come from and who we are as people can sometimes separate us from who we are as Americans and Patriots. Brian Williams put it best when he wrote, “Americans have decided that the most important person in their lives …them, and our culture is now built upon that idea” (Williams, 449). It is not about just race or social status or political or ideological views but a combination of all and more. Even though there are still citizens who haven’t overcome the sense of change and diversity, we are still a nation of others living in the same country.
