Gesundheit – Patch Adams Patch Adams - the way he led his life was a strong argument in itself. He challenged the historic medical traditions and rules that said doctors are above patients, that they should keep professional distance and must be serious, intense, and not make time for joy and compassion. Patch Adams disagreed. He said doctors have to use personal feelings because they are dealing with people. Doctors should connect with people and improve the quality of life instead of just treating diseases. The arguments he makes through his actions in the three primary ways: by challenging rules, by showing his passions, and by fighting to put compassion first as a doctor. During the school years, it seemed that Adam was contesting the school beliefs, teaching, and their strong historical pillars of reasoning. He broke the rule that students should have no contact with patients until the third year. Of course, he got into trouble with Dean Walcott, which he said, “Our ways of doing things is a product of centuries of experience. It is all there for a reason.“ This implicit tells that there was an explanation back in time, and Dean Walcott uses this argument in a way that he blindly believed in traditions and he will uphold it without second thoughts, which are invalid arguments. Adam did oppose those rules because he concluded that students would learn much more if they make interactions with patients. Adam raised a great question about the facts that people only do what they have been told; they have great minds but only think about traditions and rules as a guide rather reflection and analysis. Early in the movie, Adams character showed from the beginning to the end that he is a fighter and does not accept refusal.
