Pancreatic cancer, also called pancreatic carcinoma, is cancer of the pancreas. The pancreas is an organ located behind the stomach, which makes and releases enzymes that help the body absorb food, especially fats. The pancreas also makes the hormones insulin and glucagon, which help control your blood sugar levels. Pancreatic cancer is a malignant neoplasm originating from transformed cells arising in tissues forming the pancreas. The most common type of pancreatic cancer, accounting for 95% of these tumors, is adenocarcinoma. This arises within the exocrine component of the pancreas. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, and the eighth worldwide. Pancreatic cancer has an extremely poor prognosis: for all stages combined. According to the American Cancer Society, for all stages of pancreatic cancer combined, the one-year relative survival rate is 20%, and the five-year rate is 4%. These low survival rates are attributable to the fact that fewer than 20% of patients' tumors are confined to the pancreas at the time of diagnosis; in most cases, the malignancy has already progressed to the point where surgical removal is impossible. Radiation therapy, which uses high energy x-rays to kill the cancer cells, can be used depending on the type and stage of the cancer.
