ScienceDaily states, “According to the NCAA, female athletes are at least twice as likely to suffer an ACL injury as male athletes and in some cases up to eight times more likely” (“Why Women Suffer More Knee Injuries"). Female anatomy and knee alignment contribute to these statistics. A male knee has more room for the ACL to stretch while twisting than a female knee. This lack of space causes the knee to pinch, and possibly tear, the ligament. Knee alignment for females is also at a greater angle than males because the pelvis of a female is wider than that of a male (McAlindon).
There are also many other types, but these are the most common. The life expectancy for many of these forms depends on the degree to which a person’s muscles are weakening. While there are many different kinds of Muscular Dystrophy, symptoms include trouble breathing, or swallowing. Their limbs may also become drawn inward and become fixed in that position. They also can affect the heart and organs.
If an infection is the reason for the pain, there would be nausea, fever, vomiting, cramping and constipation. Diverticula is common in people after 40 years of age. When you have inflamed diverticula, the condition is known as diverticulosis. You may never even know that you have these pockets because they rarely cause any problems as severe as diverticulitis. Diverticulitis usually gets worse throughout the first day.
The problem of childhood obesity in the United States has grown considerably in recent years. Between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. If one parent is obese, there is a 50 percent chance that their children will also be obese. However, when both parents are obese, their children have an 80 percent chance of being obese (Obesity In Children and Teens par. 1).
According to the CDC, 50% of African American women, 40% of Mexican women, and 30% of Caucasian women are obese and therefore at risk for development of type 2 diabetes. Improved screening and education strategies are necessary in reversing the trend of this devastating chronic disease. Morbidity and Mortality “In the United States, an estimated 7% of the population, (20.8 million people), have diabetes mellitus; 14.6 million people have been diagnosed and 6.2 million remain undiagnosed. In addition, approximately 41 million Americans have prediabetes, which may eventually lead to a clinical diagnosis of diabetes,” (DISEASEDEX, 2012). In 2009, diabetes was the cause of death in 150 women in Allegheny County alone, (PA Department of Health, 2009).
Most people who suffer with it are over 65 but there are 150,000 people under 65 who also suffer with it. There are 55 types of dementia however 10 of these are the most progressive, 3 of which are the most common and severe. There is currently no cure. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common case of dementia affecting around 465,000 people in the UK. It is a physical condition affecting the brain.
WORK CITIED INTRODUCTION Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Millions of Americans have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and many more are unaware they are at high risk. Some groups have a higher risk for developing type II diabetes than others. Type 2 diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and as well as the aged
(Bliuc, 2009) Both conditions are very common, especially in women, so much so that the United States Surgeon General has estimated that a total of 45 million people in this country suffer from either one of these debilitating conditions. A 10 % loss of bone mass in the vertebrae can double a person’s risk of having a vertebral fracture, and a 10 % loss of bone mass in the hip increases to 2.5 times a greater risk of having a hip fracture. (Klotzbuecher, 2000) Even in today’s enlightened environment up to 80 % of individuals at high risk who have already had at least one Osteoporotic fracture and have been treated fail to follow up with annual BMD tests. (Eisman, 2004) In the past Osteoporosis been traditionally underdiagnosed and undertreated, which can be explained by one of or a combination of factors. To the patient, it has traditionally been considered as a consequence of just getting older and the early symptoms of neck or muscle pain are rarely relayed to the health care professional by the patient until fractures actually develop, so, as such, these symptoms may be overlooked as minor ailments to be tolerated.
Black women in the District suffer from obesity, diabetes, heart disease and generally poor health in alarmingly high numbers, and white women do not. That is the finding of a study released early today by the Kaiser Family Foundation. The study said there is a large disparity in the incidence of certain chronic diseases between black and white women. Kaiser's study was based on data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the federal Current Population Survey from 2004 to 2006. The study reflected health statistics in the states and the District.
Since the mid-1950s, suicide rates around the world have risen by 60%. Rates among young people have risen even faster, to the point where they are now the age group at highest risk in 35% of the world’s countries. The specific demographics, however, vary from country to country. China’s pattern, for example, is very different from that of most other countries. China has a suicide mortality rate of 23:100,000, with a total of 287,000 deaths by suicide each year.
