For example, in the south, African Americans had little chance of being employed against white people, due to the discrimination of employers. This trapped blacks in a cycle of poverty; if they couldn’t get jobs, they couldn’t afford to pay poll tax so they could vote for someone who would improve their employment rights. Also, southern African Americans had few employment opportunities. For example, sharecropping and other agricultural jobs were the main opportunities. African American women were treated even worse than men.

Sondra Douglas English Honors Gifted- 4th Mrs. Hotlets March 4, 2014 Gender Inequality in the Workplace Gender inequality is the unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on gender. Over the last 50 years, the involvement of women and fairness has been a problem. Economically, women, particularly poor women and African American women did not fare well during this time period. The overall health of a nation is often judged by the health of their infants, children, and women of childbearing age. Consequently, our life expectancy rates are highly dependent on our infant mortality rates. The racial disparities amongst infant mortality rates and the mortality rate amongst women who died of pregnancy-related complications have been used as an indicator of social inequalities. There are numerous factors that affect the health of infants and pregnant women, however many of these factors reflect or are related to the health status of the mother, her immediate environment, and access to adequate health care. In 2006, the mortality rate amongst black women who died of pregnancy-related complications (34.8 per 100,000 births) was about four times the rate of white women
