Kody Woerner Mrs. Zauner Contemporary English 10 October 2013 Courage is everything War, terrible war. When you first think of war, what do you think of? If you are anything like me you would think of the horrors that war brings. In the book Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden, the American military is in Somalia to take down a ruthless dictator who takes food hostage from the people of his country causing mass famine. A group of rangers goes in to the town to take down two of the dictator’s right hand men.
He informs us of the widespread famine and the government’s denial of food aid. The prevalent diseases are polio, Hepatitis A, B, C, and E, rabies, malaria, typhoid, yellow fever, meningitis, leprosy, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS (15). The living conditions are no better. Some of the tribes are living in open caves, their villages having been bombed offer no shelter in their burned out buildings. The Sudanese government is supplying arms to the Arab nomads who have formed militias to attack and destroy villages.
Page |1 Daniel Castracion Soc 100 tues-thurs Hotel Rwanda Between April and June 1994 a war between the Hutus and Tutsis occurred in the East African country of Rwanda. An estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed in the span of 100 days. I will discuss the basic scenario of the movie, how social theories may have influence particular outcomes and how dehumanization of the Tutsi people may have led to the acceptance of the genocide. This horrific event was not merely an act of one denomination simply not liking the other. Colonial history, global economic integration and finally the assassination president Habyarimana was the perfect combination for the tragic genocide of the Tutsi people of Rwanda.
Ryan was forced to respond to them and launched an investigation. Jim Jones wanting to end the interference by the government, granted the congressman permission to visit Jonestown and on November 17, 1978 he did. Because living conditions for the members of People’s Temple were deteriorating, Congressman Ryan was approached during the investigation by a few members of the now recognized cult, requesting to take them back to the United States, a request he agreed to. At an isolated airstrip on the 18th, gunmen from Jonestown ambushed Congressman Ryan's party. Leo J. Ryan and four others were killed immediately, some of the Ryan party escaped into the jungle.

There is a lot that one can assume just by looking at the piece. At the time this picture was painted, Bosnian Serb guerrillas were carrying out campaigns of “ethnic cleansing” which explains the title of the painting. Soldiers were clearing out certain ethnic groups but either just killing them or by turning them out of their homes. It was the worst refugee crisis in Europe since World War II Firstly I would like to comment on the contents of the picture. There are six figures sitting on the dusty floor outside, it is a bright day, which implies that these people are in a hot country (Bosnia).
In 1922 the island was used for the location of a mental hospital which was where a doctor experimented on his patients by torturing them with hammers and chisels until killing them. It is said that the doctor threw himself from the bell tower of the island after reportedly hearing the screams and moans of the plague victims as well as his own victims. Since then the island has been completely shut closed for tourists wanting to see where thousands of plague victims lay to rest. “The Black Death” will in doubt be remembered as one the most agonizing and painful plagues ever to occur in history causing millions of deaths. It is said that there was not enough people left alive during the plague to bury the numerous amount of dead victims.

Time slowed down and life was a blur. In the soil of Vinah Chanh, South of Saigon, a booby trap set by the Viet Cong awaited an innocent victim. As the acting squad leader my Uncle, Specialist John Robert Baummer, was leading his platoon when the booby trap went off. This ensuing debacle riddled his legs with shrapnel. Pain like a hot iron on skin flooded his legs causing my Uncle to be taken off the line.
