Our identity can be difficult for others to accept. Your identity is purely who you are. There are aspects of your identity that stay the same throughout your life, unique to individuals. However, identity is subject to change, due to change in environment. Many things that you come across will influence your identity without a doubt, including your peers, the latest trends and technology such as social media and the internet. Acceptance is receiving the approval of others. To be accepted by them. Unfortunately identity and acceptance do not always go hand in hand. Some people feel the need to alter their identity in order to be accepted by others. Whether it be peers, community, family, or even society, if they do not accept others it is because of their differences. These differences could include ignorance, fear of change or perhaps jealousy. Everywhere you look, issues of racism, sexism and homophobia are prominent, particularly in older generations. However, many children of the younger generations are being brought up to be more accepting of sexuality and multiculturalism. Potentially, this can lead to the eradication of discrimination; though it is not a guaranteed solution to the problem. Racism and other forms of discrimination are still shockingly common in rural areas where devices such as the internet are unable to effectively spread messages of equality. For example; ‘Inheritance’, the play written by Hannie Rayson, is set in the rural victorian town of Rushton. Rushton is a farming community with traditional values and opinions. The people of Rushton, similarly to other rural farming towns, have been brought up to believe that people with darker skin, european and asian backgrounds are inferior to them. The character Felix, being a ‘city slicker’ demonstrates his frustrations regarding the town’s backwards mentality and their difficulty in
