AL Qaeda and the Life of Osama Bin Laden On September 11, 2001, I was headed off to work in Seattle Washington. I remember walking through the hallways of the hospital before the clinic doors opened, and wondering where all my staff was. I called one of my specialists up and was going to chew them out for being late when he told me the news that the post was on lock down and personnel could not get onto post. I turned on the television just in time to see the second airplane strike the twin towers, and as I stood there looking at the television and watched the towers as they collapsed I wondered who could be responsible for such a terrible attack. Osama Bin Laden, who helped to create this notorious group, was a leader, religious fanatic, and soldier to the Islamic cause. In the following paragraphs I am going to discuss the origins of Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda and what countermeasures it might take to put an end to tyranny. Osama Bin Laden was born on July 30, 1957 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia according to the CIA in Washington DC, but due to the fact that it was not a common practice to register births in Saudi Arabia at that time that date is controversial. His bother Yeslem Bin Laden stated in an interview with the London Sunday Times that he was either born in 1952 or 1953 (Gunaratna). His was the seventeenth son of fifty-two; his father was Muhammad Bin Laden from Yemen and his mother Hamida from Damascus, Syria. Osama was raised in Medina where he attended school in Jeddah, and after marrying a Syrian woman he went on to study economics and management at King Abdulaziz University. He did not complete his studies he left school after the third year. While studying at the University of Jeddah, Osama Bin Laden was taught Islamic studies from two noted professors that had a great and profound impact on his pursuit of Islam. He went on to help form the Afghan Service Bureau also known as MAK this group played a key role in the anti-Soviet resistance. He went on to raise millions of dollars for the Afghan movement, what he later called the Afghan jihad. In the mid-1980s he moved out of Afghanistan and into Pakistan where he and a friend built their first training camp. During the 80s Osama continued to assist the Afghanistan nationals by building roads and constructing field hospitals. This made him very popular with the government and locals. Osama continued to play a supporting role in the Afghan war, but it was not until the late 80s that he took on another role as soldier. He went on to fight in many battles and stayed on the front lines which made him seem fearless. Osama Bin Laden traveled a lot back and forth from many countries, but while living on the Afghan-Pakistan border religious convictions became much more profound. By 1989 the Soviet Union forces were defeated and kick out of Afghanistan, Osama took credit for winning the war and the expulsion of the Soviet troops.
