Organizational Design Sharon Casalotta HCS514 September 17, 2012 Norma Wright Organizational Design A health care organization functions within a specific structure and different processes. It is important for these functions to complement each other and promote a positive and safe environment and a financially stable organization. However, there are internal and external factors, including rules, and regulations of accountability for both the organization and the staff members, which could cause the organization to fail if not managed effectively. Currently Medicare as put a new program in place known as DMEPOS Competitive Bidding for durable medical equipment suppliers. Under the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, suppliers must compete to distribute certain equipment within its community (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, n.d.).This has become a huge burden for CHS Home Support Services. The organization has put in its documentation for round two and is awaiting decision to see if it will remain a provider of certain equipment. If the organization loses the bidding war and can no longer provide a walker, cane, or commode, oxygen, beds, and wheelchairs or any other essential piece of equipment a patient may need it could be financially devastating. It provides staff members with a chain of command. Organizational structure provides both a harmony and operative efficiency between staff members and departments (Anderson, 2012). CHS Home Support Services is part of a large entity known as Catholic Health Services of Long Island. The entity consists of a durable medical organization, a home care organization, two long-term facilities, in-patient and out-patient hospice and five hospitals. The structure is quite vast within this entity, but for CHS Home Support Services there is a president, a compliance officer, three managers, two supervisors, and support staff. When an issues staff members need to follow the chain of command. An organizational process is a design of procedures for staff to complete necessary tasks. Management decides these goals for each staff member, and assembles staff with the structure to work together and accomplish the organizations goals.
