Oral pathology is recognized as one of the dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. It also has its own certifying board called the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. This deals with the nature, identification and management of diseases affecting the oral cavity. It also investigates the causes and processes and effects of these diseases. The practice of oral pathology includes research, diagnosis of diseases using microscopic, radiographic, clinical, biochemical or other exams of patients. Oral Pathology began to appear around the nineteenth century, which was known as the Golden Age of dentistry starting around 1835. Around 1839 approximately thirty two journals were written and published tumors, fungus and lesions were being talked about extensively. Thomas Emerson Bond Jr. born in Maryland was known as the Father of oral pathology. In 1840, he became the first professor and Chairman of Special pathology and Therapeutics, with the opening of the first dental school in the world, The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. He was the chairman for at least 30 years. Mr. Bond was one of the most influential men of the nineteenth century dental profession. He was considered one of the Americans of the dental profession to “birth’ modern dentistry. He was quoted by others and he wrote and published his first textbook in 1848 titled, A Practical Treatise on Dental Medicine. This textbook was among one of the first English text devoted strictly to oral pathology. His textbook was very detailed on his diagnosis and those made before him even though they were not written. Bond was the first to report several oral diseases in which some of them are still valid today. He always thought of himself first as a Doctor of Dental Surgery.
