These lessons need to be creative, incorporate activities and techniques that will engage the learner. The teacher must also be flexible and have the ability to change an activity quickly if it is not achieving the desired effect or learning is not moving forward in a positive direction. Learners themselves bring assumptions about learning based on the past, and some of these may get in the way of looking ahead to a new way of learning. Employers, providers and learners themselves all need to know more. Initial assessment is a vital part of the process of finding out. A good initial assessment process is done early on – in the first few days or weeks of contact with learners. This is different from selection – though information gained through the selection process should be useful during the assessment.
Inclusive learning should promote positive behaviour and conduct. A teacher needs to recognise that learner comes with different learning styles and needs. Maslow stated unless certain need are met the learner cannot progress. Malsow ‘s hierarchy of needs theory is: Learners needs have to to be met in order for leaners to be involved and focused on their learning. For individual learning styles to be met, within a good learning sessions a teacher will ensure he/she takes a multi-sensory approach to teaching, this way each learner can work to the best of their ability.
As a teacher, one of the main roles is to motivate your learners to develop their ability and aspiration to learn. Some may read about delivering training and facilitating learning , but in reality a teacher does much more than that. A teaching role is not just about teaching your subject or preparing learners for assessment. The focus of a teaching role relates very much to inspiring learners to change and develop their personal, social and professional skills to the best of their ability. In this respect, the ultimate aim is to enable learners to understand how to take responsibility for their own development.
Explain the functions of assessment in learning and development Initial assessment in identifying learner needs The Initial assessment (IA) process could be classed as the most important information gathering process. It not only allows the teacher to decipher if the student is enrolling on the correct course for them but also to collect details about the learners past educational experiences, upbringing conditions i.e. a care environment and any particular learning issues. The initial assessment can be both formal and informal. Formal IA may be application forms, references and other relevant documentation.
If I were to explain this to someone that has never taken this course I would explain that in order to learn you have to be receptive to it. In other words, you have to have an open mind in regards to new information. I would also explain that there are several different types of processes of learning. He also stated that “students need to know what you expect from them and what they expect from you during the course; that they need to know where the boundaries lie and what will happen if they step over the boundaries”.
To be successful is to understand what is important to you, to recognize your weaknesses without hiding behind them, to strive for balance as well as open new doors in life. Section II- Standards for Human Service Educators Human service educators need to keep themselves updated on the different teaching styles and not be judgemental towards students. They need to let the student express themselves as they want and are offered to discuss what is being learned or taught to them for a better understanding. Human service educators need to be fully commited to their responsibilities as educators as well. They are to uphold professional relationships with their students and to treat all their students equally and fairly.
Such decisions include a better and thorough understanding of the students´ particular learning styles, their affective needs, and their own personal goals to establish the right balance between teaching and learning. Another essential aspect I need to consider when planning or teaching a lesson is pacing, which again, was one of my biggest problems for this lesson. “Pacing is the extent to which a lesson maintains its momentum and communicates a sense of development. How much time to allocate to each part of the lesson is thus an important decision which teachers must make while planning or teaching a lesson.” (Jack C. Richards, 1997).
