The Consequences of Loyalty and Disloyalty in The Odyssey. There the dog Argos lay in the dung, all covered in dog ticks. Now, as he perceived that Odysseus had come close to him, he wagged his tail, and layed both ears back; only he now no longer had the strength to move any closer to his master. 17.300.305 Loyalty in The Odyssey is important because Odysseus stayed true to his wife although he was stuck on the island for many years. And his wife stayed true to him while he was away, even when the suitors were in the house trying to marry her. Any reader can interpret the concept of loyalty as appearing in The Odyssey. Readers can also observe the consequences of not being loyal. Therefore, there is a lesson contained in The Odyssey: Loyalty is an important characteristic that good people should have, and failure to be loyal results in tragedy. Disloyal characters cause their own destruction. By analyzing Antinoos, Melanthios, other suitors and bad servant’s readers can clearly see how their acts have a terrible toll on them, and ultimately leads to their death. Antinoos is the leader of the Suitors; he is the one that causes all of the destruction and mischief. Melanthios was “one” of Odysseus servants but he betrayed him by assisting the suitors in their mission to court Penelope and to marry her. All of the other suitors in the house had disrespected Odysseus house hold. They should be ashamed of courting someone’s wife while they are gone over a period of time. Although many people thought Odysseus was dead many stayed loyal to him in his time of need. Everybody acts of disloyalty were then seen to be bad and then lead to the destruction of each individual that was trying to court/marry Penelope. Loyalty can be seen as a good characteristic in a person or persons. As although we have seen a lot of disloyalty there is good in this book. Odysseus and
