Unlike a Protagonist, there is only one Hero, A hero is generally defined as a person who displays great courage in the face of danger and is willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good. In this novel neither one really fits the description of 'Hero', Arthur doesn't sacrifice much for George, and George is already in a very bad position so doesn't really have much to sacrifice. In this novel the hero would have to be chosen by the person that did the most heroic act. By this definition we can conclude that Arthur is the hero as he helped George get out of his misery and back on his feet. George also helped Arthur through Touie's death, We also have more sympathy towards George as he is from a poor family, he is constantly victimized due to his skin colour and myopia.
“You are a clever man, friend John; you reason well, and your wit is bold; but you are to prejudiced. You do not let your eyes see nor your ears hear, and that which is outside your daily life is not of account to you… Ah, it is fault in our science that it wants to explain all; and if it explain not, then it says there is nothing to explain…(Ch. 14, pg. 207) 3. “Friend John.
Taylor is a man with seemingly unlimited power to control the very minds of people. In addition to being a story of good v. evil, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a David and Goliath story. In addition to being a good man, Jeff Smith is also a man with very little money and power. Jeff doesn't have the resources to fight Taylor. But he knows that he is right, and that's all he needs to keep on fighting.
Odysseus is no way any god or faultless man but just a man that just wants to be perfect. Odysseus negative views are not liked but they make Odysseus positive points look very strong. Is Odysseus some kind of god or is Odysseus a perfect man that keeps his positive views would not be real exceptional nor great they would be just views for people to listen to. When Odysseus weak points get him into problems Odysseus always uses his strong points to free him from that problem. Take a look at this example when his recklessness action with the Cyclops in the cave could have destroyed him and all his friends were going to die, his courageousness and intelligent approach were capable to save nearly all of them without any problems at
Looking at these events from a non-religious perspective the gods can be seen as symbols of Odysseus’ personality. Athena represents the strong-willed side of him, while Poseidon can be seen as his self-destructive tendencies. These conflicting characteristics are keeping him from reaching his final destination of Ithaca. Odysseus is cunning and witty but he can be pompous and arrogant at the same time. Self esteem is not a short coming for him.
Additionally, a hero must be able to make decisions benefitting the majority and not just themselves. However, Odysseus is not a hero because he is cowardly, disloyal, and self-centered. One reason that makes Odysseus not a hero is his cowardly actions. A true hero is recognized for their fearlessness and bravery in times of trouble; however, when Odysseus visits the underworld his true emotions are exposed. Seemingly
‘Neither Paul nor Keller gets the life he expects.’ Is Maestro primarily a study of disappointment and loss? In Peter Goldsworthy “Maestro” there is the hard truth of reality that not all dreams come true but through this disappointment there is growth, happiness and learning. Eduard Keller had a life of success with a sudden loss that ruined him and caused him to escape, with this he found a new life, a new student and became happy with his achievements and relationship with Paul. Paul Crabbe doesn’t get to achieve what he aims to be but the journey and everything that happened to him during it changes him, his dream didn’t come true but who says he isn’t happy with the life he ends up with. Even though Paul and Keller do suffer disappointment they both need each other to strive through and reach their goals, their relationship drives each other and they
In the classic epic poem The Odyssey, Telemachus’ character is, in my opinion an extremely wise and patient man. While his father is away, he lacks the courage that he needs to stand up to the suitors until Athena comes to him and gives him the valor that he desires. Until he acquires that courage, however, he is particularly patient with the suitors. Most men today in a similar situation would not tolerate a fraction of these suitors for more than a few days. Furthermore, Telemachus’ cunning is outstanding even for a man of his time.
The Great Gatsby A hero can be defined as a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. In the novel The Great Gatsby the hero Nick Carraway may not fit the definition of a hero as he does not save a life or show extreme bravery though he is a decent, honest and honorable man who most closely resembles an average human being out of all of the other characters in the novel. This therefore qualifies him as the hero in the novel he is also adversely affected or change by most of the events of the plot. Unlike Nick both the Buchanans and Gatsby are a faced with the fault of death and even that does not change them, they try to hide it or blame others to protect themselves. All of the characters in The Great Gatsby start out with there own dreams and goals, well Gatsby and the Buchanan’s let nothing stand in the way of their dreams and goals, Nick adapts his dreams and goals as the plot unfolds which ensures he is always happy with his choices.
The Bath knight did not have a very noble character; his actions did not prove to be very knightly. Sir Gawain’s quest is based off a challenge that he accepted to defend King Arthur. He realizes that King Arthur’s life is much more significant than his own. “I am the weakest, well I know, and of wit feeblest, / and the loss of my life would be least of any” (354-355). He accepts the challenge from a traveling knight, to exchange blows.
