They are both doing something that no human would ever do, like taking a challenge for your king or being a superhero and fighting dangerous villains everyday. Even though these characters aren’t real, we can learn something from them. You don’t have to perfect to be a hero. The best heroes are the ones that most people wouldn’t expect to be. Gawain was the weakest knight who took up a challenge that no one else would, which makes him brave and courageous.
Although we may not have seen Hotspur as a hero in the beginning of the play, more examples presented themselves as the play moved along. Hotspur is not a hero in the modern sense of the word. He did not save a life or say all the right things, but in Shakespeare's time, a hero stands for a cause and never wavers from that cause no matter the circumstances. He has to overcome seemingly impossible challenges, he displays great resourcefulness, but most importantly despite the dangerous obstacles he faces he never loses courage and he uses his bravery and knowledge to get him home, where he needs to be. In the beginning of the story he can’t seem to decide whether or not going home is the right choice. Many of the obstacles he faced seemed like the outcome wouldn’t come out in his favor but because he had faith and intelligence the outcomes weren’t as bad as expected. Real, Not Epic Being a hero in the real world isn’t easy. In the story, “Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma” by Camilla Townsend, Townsend states that Pocahontas and her people, “is a story of heroism as it exists in the real world, not in epic tales” (178). In epic tales, anything is possible and there is always a happy ending. Alternately, in the real world, there are rarely happy endings and everything doesn’t always happen for the best. Pocahontas and her people were epic heroes and never gave up on what they believed in.
Additionally, a hero must be able to make decisions benefitting the majority and not just themselves. However, Odysseus is not a hero because he is cowardly, disloyal, and self-centered. One reason that makes Odysseus not a hero is his cowardly actions. A true hero is recognized for their fearlessness and bravery in times of trouble; however, when Odysseus visits the underworld his true emotions are exposed. Seemingly
