Castellano 1 Lilia Castellano ENG 112 Not So Modern Family Modern Family is an Emmy award-winning sitcom that is centered on three families living in Los Angeles that are all interrelated through Jay Prichett and his children. Being a four-season comedy, there is plenty of room for traditional gender roles and stereotypes, especially of women, through the Gloria, Claire and Haley characters. On one hand, Gloria and Claire match the stereotypical gender role of the stay-at-home mother, set in modern America. On the other hand, Haley represents the common mischievous teenager role. First of all, Claire Dunphy is the most stereotypical character in the show, as she plays the standard stay-at-home American mother. She represents the traditional housewife that gave up her career to dedicate her life to her family. Also, she is an overly competitive, neurotic, control freak, and feels as though she knows everything there is to know. For example, Claire believes her family cannot be together in an RV for more than six minutes. She assures everyone that it will be a complete chaos, as she always believes her opinion is right when managing her family, which ultimately proved to be incorrect during their vacation (“Games People Play”). Furthermore, while Claire’s audience is more likely to identify with her character, she is the opposite of Gloria. She is insensitive Castellano 2 and aggressive in an authoritarian manner. Comparatively, her husband plays the sensitive role in her family. Finally, Gloria challenges her modern role by being the “set in stone”, “my way or the highway”, mother. The program depicts a much more modern mother with Claire’s character, but contradicts that by being a woman who does not work and waits every day for her husband to come home and serve dinner.
