The press reached a massive audience in Britain at the time, spreading news of Empire to all. More people could read in the lower classes, and the owners of newspapers, such as Lord Northcliffe, recognised that this new class of people would be more attracted to pictures and sensationalised stories. How do you think the media influences the decisions of citizens and government officials? - I think the media influences affect is by the agenda setting for them. Meaning that this connects to the quantity and the kind of news coverage on the main topic of issues being presented.
The mass media is the means by which messages and images are communicated to a mass audience, it does this through its various Mass Communication Technologies (MCTs), and for instance the Internet is a very powerful and influential MCT communicating worldwide. MCTs educate, persuade and inform as well as entertain their audience. Media is geographically dispersed and has no limits due to its global domination. It is also culturally diverse and socially mixed. Pluralists believe that the mass media is reflective of social reality, and acts as a 'mirror'.
In addition, the Populist Party built a platform that clarified their goals. These included the demand for a “free ballot and a fair count in all election”, a “graduated income tax”, and the condemning of “the fallacy of protecting American labor under the present system” (Document C). These goals that were established identified the growing need for political leadership to be altered, especially for the reasons mentioned in the Populist platform. The Populist Party gained followers by calling people together and influencing them to take side with their platform. Some of this was accomplished with newspapers, which taught the principles of the “People’s Party to citizens.
Some cause for concerns can be found in the first writing of the Constitution (the one that will soon be thoroughly discussed) and some lay in more recent Amendments. However, we must not forget that these voices can only be discussed out loud for all opinions to be made on it because of the foresight of those in our past that demanded such rights before approving the Constitution as the foundation of our new government. The Constitution that was written before the ratification debate was adequate in its democracy, but fell short of its goal of creating a government that incorporates all of the citizens views equally and effectively. The second characteristic of an ideal discourse community is the concept that the individuals share ideas amongst one another. Open communication is vital to any social group and this idea holds true for a discourse community. When congress meets to discuss various topics and debate on major issues within our country, there are many heated debates which take place. If our elected senators and congressmen do not speak their mind and voice their opinion then we would pass too many laws that would upset the unheard supporters of the opposition. Communication is key amongst any association which meets to share certain perceptions and find solutions to diversified dilemmas.
Also by the first half of the 16th century early modern authors had their works printed and distributed to the general public (Doc. 9). This allowed modern and current ideas to spread more quickly and on a grander scale. With all the new books and ideas getting printed and distributed to the public, people couldn’t help but to be inclined to read more. This spread literacy very quickly.
When anything happens in the government the news is there to report and stand by to inform the people . The people of any nation must have the right to know what the government is doing. The media is that subway between Capital hill and Main Street USA but more so today then ever before this subway has occurred detours that we do not even know where we are going or where we are headed. They are an important factor in the rulemaking process and many times will seek to ensure that any enacted policy reflects their group interest. They also play a role in the operational aspect of public policies, granting there feedback to executive members. Executive member have been known to use these written reaction to pass, end or amend the propose rule, so that it does not affect these groups of individuals. “The real role of interest groups and other interested groups, including political parties, comes when the policies are implemented by the government. It is at the implementation stage of the policy process when the policy may be abandoned by the government, implemented or modified to meet the demands of the interested parties”.
Citizens must be engage in the decision making because this will have great impact on their life, therefore they should vote to express their opinion in the government. Voting is a privilege and a responsibility to citizen to participate in public affairs and choose those who should govern them.
