Using Johns (1994) model of reflection, this reflective account will look at my thoughts and feelings following a new birth visit. DESCRIPTION This visit highlighted to me the issues and the delicacy of maternal mental health and how life events can affect the wellbeing of an individual. A close relative of the family I visited had very recently lost their baby shortly after being born. This had obviously been very difficult time and I was aware that the birth of a new baby within the family may have come with mixed emotions.
I was given the opportunity to read up the policy and procedures of my placement agency and I was also given the induction pack file which contains documents on guidelines of Health and Safety policy, IT information guidelines and my practice portfolio. I shadowed my Link supervisor when we made a home visit to discuss one of one of her clients' completed Look After Child (LAC) report. 31st January 2013. Today I attended a Multi Agency Review Meeting with a social worker in my team. Before attending the meeting I read through the child’s case file containing the child’s historical and medical background.
Ethical dilemma: Sarah has been trying to conceive her first child for quite some time and her wish has finally been granted. During her prenatal visit her physician did some blood work and came back with positive results of her child having Down syndrome, and tay-sachs disease. The ethical dilemma is should Sarah bring and intellectually disabled child into this world? Should she trust in god and believe that god has her back? Will the child suffer because of the chromosomal disorder?
There was a complete transformation in her debilitating diagnosis to one of goal setting for discharge. She was feeding herself and began walking on the hall with assistance. Diligence and compassion for this patient was needed at all times and her family wrote a letter of appreciation for all of us that provided care and a personal letter to me that was given to my supervisor for employee of the month. There were days when the wound had a foul odor and at times she was resistant to care but a kind word from the heart with a gentle touch was received.
