She embodies the conundrum and the narrative she presents alludes to experiences that we can empathize with through a logical and characteristic breadth of mutual understanding. The pathos within her discussion continues with the concept of how writing is used to dispossess and to malign” yet there are stories that are written to “empower and to humanize” (Adichie, 17:44). These terms are powerful in and of themselves. Her focus on dignity of each human being is clearly received, thus confirming her emotional appeals through logic and heart. She is credible, authentic, and concerned.
It made it easier to figure out exactly what she was looking for in my paper. It clarified some questions I had and made me realize that I can actually write a good paper when I put my mind to it and take the same time and effort as she does to correct our papers and apply to writing my own
Summary of the book This book follows the neglect and abuse of Katie and is told in story format for parts of the book. Hughes gives a commentary at the end of each chapter on his thoughts of the issues of how each stage of abuse affects not only Katie’s development but also how it was affecting her mother Sally as well. After Katie is placed into foster care the story details the two different sides that Katie shows her foster parents. She goes from being a happy child when things go her way into an aggressive and mean child who wants to get even by destroying other peoples possessions. Katie’s caseworker struggles to find a foster home for her and to find the right therapist to help her with her lack of attachment to anyone.
“Unnecessary Controversy” Unnecessary Controversy “Jims’ a nigger and wouldn’t understand it” (Twain 182). That’s what Huckleberry Finn says about Jim, a runaway slave that he is helping and as if black people are any less intelligent. The word “nigger” gives the story more meaning instead of what some people think offends the reader. Throughout the book, Huckleberry struggles with himself about whether he should be helping Jim or not and that struggle claws at the reader. Mark Twain, the author of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, made a good choice to include controversial words in the book to show racial injustice and should be taught in schools.
Josh Beatty Mrs. Moore Honors English 10 April 28th, 2011 The majority of people have been picked on or teased at some point in their life. Racism in the 1960’s was an extreme form of bullying. The civil rights movement was occurring in this time. The Secret Life of Bees happens during this hard, and wonderful, time for African Americans, specifically 1964, wonderful because they were getting their rights as an American citizen. In the book, Rosaleen, an African American housekeeper and nanny, gets upset with the bullying and the overpowering of the whites and acts out; this acting out gets her put in jail.
Educating Esme: pages 40-78 The very first paragraph of this section of the book presents an issue. Esme stated “If they want a normal classroom experience, they’re going to get one.” She says this because someone stole a comic from her own library. I understand that she is upset, but Esme is punishing the whole class for one student’s actions. Is it right to do this? Esme deals with a student’s parent.
” (2nd paragraph) are straightforward statements. They point strongly to the idea. The author takes her case to make it general and is showing that she represents all those people in the same case. She emphasizes the ethical appeal; she projects an impression to the readers and listeners. The repetition of the pronouns “I” and “You” make her ideas stronger and more specific.
Douglass unintentionally heard of people around him talking between them that whites maintain power over black slaves by keeping them uneducated. He instantly shocked. Douglass has known intuitively that slavery is evil, but has been mystified by the logic of how slavery works. Douglass decided to educate himself and to escape from slavery. However, he is later taken from the Aulds and placed with Edward Covey, a slave “breaker,” for a year.

The littlest things can change how we are seen as a person. For example Frederick Douglass was a slave, but he took the time to be educated and started asking questions about why the whites were doing what they were doing. Because Frederick Douglass was a slave he was seen to be a piece of property and not human in his master’s eyes, this was wrong! In the past slaves were not to be educated, it was against the law to educate a slave. Whites were scared of the power that education could offer the slaves.
