My Weekend Getaway

It is 6:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning in September. It is quiet outside except for the excited songs coming from the birds in the trees. The air is crisp, cool, and refreshing giving me a prelude to the season right around the corner. My car is packed and there is only one stop to make before reaching my destination. I’v been looking forward to this all week. Where am I going you might ask? The Stockton Flea Market! My mother in law introduced me to this wonderful event. Each Saturday, broke or not, she gets up early and makes her way to the one place where you can dawdle and browse without sales people hounding you. I adopted her weekly routine for the simple fact that you can find everything in one parking lot. From household goods, clothing, and food to electronics, car parts, and furniture, they have it all. And for me, the best part is I can browse alone and take my time. This particular Saturday is exciting because it is my birthday weekend and I am looking to spoil myself. I get gas at the local AMPM and grab a coffee from inside. Pretty soon I am on my way once again. Driving along 99 with the windows down, I feel carefree and happy. There’s not that much traffic this Saturday morning so the drive is stress free. The flea market is held in the parking lot of Delta college and it is full of early birds looking for a deal. Parking is a pain but eventually I find a spot. I make the short walk to where all the excitement is. I see babies in strollers, toddlers holding their mothers hand, school age children bouncing around, teenagers, families, older couples, men, and women; there is no shortage of variety when looking around. People young and old come to the Flea Market looking for their idea of a special deal. Standing at the entrance I see rows and rows of booths set up.
