There are a number of celebrations in the Latino community, but one of the most important is the time when a young girl becomes a woman at age fifteen. When I was younger, I would go to quinceañeras, a girl’s fifteenth birthday party, and watch girls become women with their massive ball gowns that were not my preferred style. Growing up I never really dreamt of the time when that would be me. I feared the idea of growing up, but eventually the time came when I had to leave my childhood behind. At 14 years and 5 months, I made the decision to celebrate my fifteenth birthday with family and friends in the traditional way even though it was not my style.

Amish weddings are traditionally held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in late fall, after the final autumn harvest. A couple's engagement is usually kept secret until just a few weeks before the wedding when their intentions are "published" in church. The weddings usually take place at the home of the bride's parents with a lengthy ceremony, followed by a huge feast for the invited guests. The bride typically makes a new dress for the wedding, which will then serve as her "good" dress for formal occasions after the wedding. Blue is the typical wedding dress color.
With just three weeks notice before she had to leave, Virgina at 22 years old, and fresh out of college, learned she’d been chosen by the military to teach on the Sidi Salam Air Force Base in Morocco. She was excited to receive the good news and to travel abroad for the first time. She’d be one of twelve teachers who’d educate the children of the families who lived on the strategic base. Although it seems like an overwhelmingly big step to take, for her to move from her house in Roslindale away from her family to spend a year in a new country with new people and to live a new way of life, Virginia never seemed to express any major trepidation. In leaving, she admitted to being nervous and a little scared, but it was evident that she was more excited, and most of all, mentally prepared to embark on such a life-changing adventure.

Belkov Do not fail In my family we have a ritual to go from childhood to adult at the confirmation. When a child get confirmed there is a big celebration party after the church. During this party there will be three tasks that the child has to complete to become an adul: Light a cigar, drink a glass of cognac, and last tie their own tie. This ritual has been going on for many years, and I went through it too thirteen years ago. The day started with all my family and I went to the church where I would get confirmed, a two hour long ceremony.
There were food, games family and friends all the things a child could hope for at birthday party. One year, the same year I wanted to be a fashion designer, my mother brought me a sewing machine for my birthday. I was so excited I wanted to make EVERYTHING. That summer my grandfather paid for me to get sewing lessons from a lady he knew. By the time the lessons were over I had made a skirt, a purse and pajamas.
