My Trip to China

It was a warm summer night in 2008, that I boarded a plane on the midnight flight to begin my trip to China. We were to embark on a thirteen day journey which would begin in Hong Kong and ended in Beijing. I felt both excited and scared not sure exactly what lay ahead. The first leg of my trip starts in Hong Kong, but strangely the first few days there is all a blur. I remember that we went on a few tours, but I have no solid recognition of where I went or what I saw. And as I sit here writing this paper I am still here trying to recall those memories. Being in Hong Kong reminded me of being in Manhattan. The streets are bustling with crowds and hardly any space on the sidewalk left to walk. Everyone seems to be in a rush to get to their final destination. Motorist are driving erratically and honking their horns. Much like they do here in New York; a signal to both pedestrians and other drivers to get out of the way. Walking the streets of Hong Kong reminds me of Christmas in New York City, you better hold on to your friend, family, or significant other so as not to lose them in the shuffle. The sidewalks are packed beyond capacity with tourist and shoppers everywhere, with hardly enough room left to move. As we walked along the streets outside the hotel, the window shopping and exploring begins. The smell of authentic Chinese food that perfumed the sidewalks as we walked pass the restaurants left my mouth watering and my taste buds tingling. Looking at the pictures on the menus one could only imagine; everything was written in Chinese. The choices were endless, and all so new and different but, how do you choose just one? The answer is you don’t. Most meals are served family style, you dine with a group and sample as many dishes as possible; this is fine as portions are small and the service is fast.
