The words inequality and oppression just to name a few are the phrases in which surround Muslim women living in a contemporary society. Women’s rights organisations such as The United Women’s Association located in the heart of Lakemba New South Wales (NSW) have been established in order to educate both Muslim and non-Muslim women about the changing times and their statuses in contemporary society. My previous opinion was that Australia is a multicultural society, and I believe that there is a large group of people who are Atheists. I believe that these Atheists are so close-minded that they are easily influenced by media propaganda in which portrays only one side of a group (usually the negative side). There are various moral sources in Islam in which were established by Shariah. The Shariah states the Five Pillars of Islam set out the ethical duties in life and states the basic five activities that are included in the Five Pillars. These pillars in turn portray a Muslims surrender or submission to Allah (Muslim god). The Five Pillars of Islam are as follows: 1. Shahadah: This is the belief of all Muslims that Allah is one, he is the only god, and Muhammad (PBUH) is his messenger. This meaning that Allah is a unique being and that Muhammad is Allah’s greatest prophet; 2. Salat (Prayer): This is the physical act of worship. Muslim’s are expected to pray five times a day facing towards Mecca. This depicts Muslim’s submission to Allah. Prayers are conducted at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and nightfall. 3. Zakat (charity): This is the main principle and it means that all things belong to Allah. Zakat requires that 2 ½ per cent of a person and all holdings should all be given to the poor. I came to the conclusion that there will always be that minority in which have negative outlooks on specific groups in society. I acknowledged that due to the fact that Australia is a multicultural country and allows for freedom of speech. Media outlets such as newspapers, journalists, actors/actresses etc have an enormous influence on public opinion. I have finally been able to accept my religion’s differences and understood that the contemporary Muslim society’s has been able to fast forward and relate to the current times and progress due to the help of women’s groups and educational public places in which offer education about other cultures. For me in the present time, education is at the top of my agenda and I as a woman am experiencing acceptance and relief from different members of
