Three of the best known examples would have to be George Carlin’s “Seven dirty words”, YG’s “ My Nigga”, The 2 Live Crew’s album “As Nasty As They Wanna Be.” II. Body A lot of people believe that artists have the right to say whatever they want on their songs but in the United States it is not true. Since 1978 when the US Supreme Court upheld the Federal Communications Commission’s ruling that George Carlin’s Seven dirty words was indecent material it has forced the various radio and record agencies to change their policies on what was played and what could be released without an warning label. The Supreme Court said that it was indecent but not obscene. Also, that the government has the interest to protect children and ensuring that unwanted speech is not forced on someone.
Do Stricter Gun-Control Laws Help Prevent Gun-Related Injuries/Deaths? Gun control arguments are a hot topic in America and around the world; it is a topic not likely to go away anytime soon. Arguments for and against carry their own merit and can be lengthy and broad by nature, but our intent is to debate the effect of gun-control laws and the effect they have on gun-related injuries/deaths. The argument presented here will get to the crux of why laws should or should not be enacted to prevent social ills. Most agree that gun-related injury or death of innocent citizens should never be tolerated, but there are opinions on the course to take in an effort to discover a solution.
Because of the fear of privacy invasion, the different federal agency databases were held on individual agency specific computer systems and were not accessible to anyone, but the owner. Having such a compartmentalized system did not give law enforcement nor intelligence the ability to assist each other in putting together potentially complex terror plots, and often the more sophisticated the terror plot, the more potential for mass killing (White, 2006). Communication is key in all parts of life, and especially important when dealing with such dire consequences. The USA PATRIOT Act, in Title VII, granted the expansion of information sharing systems in order to better facilitate communication between all agencies involved in counterterrorism. This called for the implementation of the Regional Information Sharing System (RISS) as a central database for all law enforcement to use (USA PATRIOT Act, 2001).
Down with the Patriot Act The Patriot Act is a very controversial law. It allows the government much more room to do as they please. Some of these practices that government officials can do are monitoring phone calls, emails, and going through personal records. They say this will help prevent terrorism, but is losing one’s privacy really worth it? Could there be a better way to prevent terrorism?
“At the moment, there is a myth in circulation, a fable that goes something like this: Radical terrorists will take advantage of our fussy legality, so we may have to suspend it to beat them. Radical terrorists mock our namby-pamby prisons, so we must make them tougher. Radical terrorists are nasty, so to defeat them we have to be nastier.” (Applebaum). This is the story being used for validating of torture. There is no proof that this story has any truth.
The reason that they put this in the constitution was that they weren’t sure if the government would be correct so they put that in if the people we ever being oppressed then they had the right and the duty to overthrow said oppression and put in place the form of government that they saw fit. This is yet another reason why guns are not the problem they are simply a tool. All you here in the news is the negatives about guns, for example how many times have you woken up turned on the news and saw that there was a shooting last night. They don’t tell you that there a millions of Americans that didn’t shoot anybody last night. This is just another example of people putting the blame where it doesn’t belong.
Digital Piracy (Copyright Infringement) according to the copyright.gov (the US government’s copyright enforcement website) is the reproduction, distribution, performance, public display, or modification of a work without the permission of the copyright owner (U.S. Copyright Office). Copyright infringement has become an increasingly prevalent scourge in today’s society as intellectual material such as music, games, movies, shows and novels are reproduced and distributed illegally without the consent of the creator. I am an advocate of the protection of intellectual material both digitally and otherwise after having written a couple of songs and poems I would not want them to pop up somewhere on the internet without royalty being paid to me. Around the world, people that have access to the internet can download digital content free of charge using peer to peer tools as well as file sharing websites.
Although the FCC was cautioned to “exercise [its] authority with the utmost restraint, lest we inhibit constitutional rights” (Winter, 2007); that is not always upheld. Tension and controversy between the media and the public have been present long before television ever existed, but the increase in modern technology has also increased controversy regarding censorship. Finding a way to make broadcasting regulations compatible with peoples fundamental right to freedom of speech and freedom of expression has become increasingly difficult. Regulations imposed on television by the government are not supposed to be contrary to the principles laid down in the First Amendment, but that does not always hold true. The First Amendment from the United States Constitution, Bill of Rights is as follows: “Congress shall
Unfortunately, the propositions made by John Lennon in these lines are unattainable. This is because world peace is a pipe dream. World peace is a pipe dream because it is in our nature to quarrel, when problems unavoidably arise, it is not always possible to solve them peacefully, there will always be powerful people who want war, and there are several mental disorders that will make a person bound to be involved in conflict. One reason why world peace is a pipe dream is because humans are naturally inclined to be involved in conflict and it is sometimes necessary for survival. Human conflict has been in existence since our first known ancestors were alive.
Though there still exists many restrictions on what one can depict on TV and in movies, many citizens argue that we need more regulations on what can and can not be seen in the theater or one's living room. However, these loosing of the bonds on television and cinema is, in actuality, a liberation of creative freedom that artists in America rightly deserve. That is not to say that sex and violence should always be considered creative expression, but in the battle to protect our morals, it is morally wrong to chain down our nation's artists with restrictions that hold back their ability to channel their creative vision and hold the mirror up to society and life. The primary purpose of the visual arts is to reflect, in one medium or another, our history as a society and the nature of our existence as human beings. This is the duty of filmmakers.
