Here rests the problem of piracy. Websites such as Media Fire, Rapid Share, and others facilitate billions of dollars in lost revenue for a variety of Media Corporations. Some of the ethical challenges surrounding the movie and music industry with respect to the Internet are piracy and illegal sharing of movie and music related content on the Internet. This activity hampers the revenues of the music and movie industry because of illegal content sharing and distribution throughout the globe via the Internet. Ethical challenges also extend to those who chose to download illegal material and furthermore set up shop to sell and distribute music and movies.
Tevin Hutchinson 11/10/2012 English 102 Technology plays a huge role in our everyday life. I do believe that technology has made our lives easier, but it also has made us more dependent on the technology itself. When using the internet for a dictionary you could easily get distracted. Anyone can put anything on the internet, so what you find might not be accurate. Most people find that looking things up on the internet is distracting because you are already on the web so why not check YouTube for a funny video, or update your status on the social network.
Internet usage is on the rise and the main sources for obtaining information in the 21st century. Like with everything it has its advantages and disadvantages. One would say the advantages out way the disadvantages, making research more accessible at any time. Social media advantages and disadvantages were discussed and they have altered the way most individual post their business. It is no longer private and once it’s posted it can be used against someone.
Cody Janowski 12/2/10 English Comp Assignment 4 The Internet has undoubtedly changed the way people live their lives. Any information we could possibly want- and more- is at our disposal, and has made life for us incredibly convenient and easy; some, however, might say too easy. One of these people is Nicholas Carr, author of the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” featured in the July/August 2008 edition of The Atlantic. Carr argues that the Net seems to be slowly demolishing our abilities to concentrate on one subject, as well as contemplate information, based on the ease of access to everything the Internet provides today. I agree with Carr to an extent; however I would say that his theory most certainly does not apply to everyone.
The concept of illegal downloading and the various perspectives of the issue have created a lot of controversy. Copyright is an issue that is continuously growing and expanding as the internet is developing. Whether or not we control this epidemic is up to the government and whether they want to spend their time and money to catch the “criminals” that commit these “dreadful” acts. The perspective of citizen one presented in the source is explaining that the government should be protecting the individual’s rights to their own personal and private property. She is stating that someone who illegally downloads media should face the same punishments as those who steal physical property.
This revolutionary way of communication can help build relationships and bonds between people. This fast speed of communication will also help one broadcast them self, and allows them to do it almost as soon as whatever they are broadcasting took place. This new way of communication can only make the world a better place, by linking people together and telling them what they need to know as quickly as possible. Building relationships on the internet is dangerous. Anyone can be behind the computer you are engaging with.
Similarly, technology has had a significant impact on how laws have had to be created and reformed in order to protect the rights of consumers. The main problem associated with technology is the lack of regulation in the environment, making consumers particularly vulnerable to illegal practices, as well as the lack of international jurisdiction. Law reform has led to arrest warrants and extradition treaties being able to be issued, and assets of a foreign online marketer can be frozen if information is obtained about their location, amongst many other legal responses, and hence the legal system generally offers adequate protection against the misuse of
There is anti-piracy laws promulgated but unfortunately not observed strictly enough to control piracy. In the case of Microsoft who is now suffering a tremendous lost of profit due to incessant act of copyright infringement, Microsoft seems to be soft in pursuing corrective action against piracy I believe due to fear of losing current trade position with the country. 2. Increased digital communication may pose a threat to intellectual property because technology allows people to create perfect clones of original works. How do you think the Internet is affecting intellectual property laws?
Negative Argument Copyright laws as enacted today are suppose to protect the rights of individuals and companies when it comes to intellectual and creative property. It is becoming more common for larger companies to seek litigation against people who breach copyright laws yet many of these companies themselves are breaching copyright laws against individuals who, for the most part, do not have the resources to fight copyright infringement cases for prolonged periods of time, if at all. As well as bigger companies using or ignoring copyright laws to their own benefit, there is also the threat to intellectual freedom. With more intellectual property being bought out, owned and controlled by the few ( larger companies and corporations), there is the threat to be able to access and use information by anyone. Copyright is supposed to be the protection of the rights of tangible expressions of ideas which is something that exists but cannot be considered an actual physical object.
Current measures have mainly been established using mainly ex-post regulation rather than ex-ante regulation. Deceptive commercial speech in the U.S is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission. The U.S constitution’s first amendment includes the freedom of speech. This has made it difficult for lawmakers develop commercial speech regulation because they are in fear of breaching this constitutional right. However, if businesses believe they have been a victim of deceptive advertising they can bring an action under s.43(a) of the Lanham Act.
