Fibromyalgia vs. Multiple Sclerosis A person might wonder how people deal with a family member, a friend with a disease, or what it is like to deal with a disease themselves. When someone is dealing with a disease their need to know what the disease is and by visiting their doctor they can rule out many different diseases by testing. Fibromyalgia is a common disease that a person has long-term with wide spread tenderness and pain at the least. It can be in the joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that attacks the central nervous system which includes the brain and the spinal cord. The exact cause of Fibromyalgia is unknown. However, there are possibilities of causes and triggers of Fibromyalgia. These include but not limited to physical or emotional trauma, abnormal pain response, sleep disturbances, and infection such as a virus, although no virus has been identified. Fibromyalgia is commonly seen in women between twenty to fifty years old (PubMed Health 1747) (PubMed Health 1463). Multiple Sclerosis is provoked by damage to the myelin sheath which is the protective covering that surrounds the nerve cells. When the sheath is damaged the nerve impulses may slow down or even stop. Inflammation is what causes the nerve damage. When the nervous system is attacked by its own immune cells, inflammation occurs. Repeated inflammation can occur along any area of the brain, spinal cord, or the optic nerve (PubMed Health 1747) (PubMed Health 1463). What triggers the inflammation is not exactly known. There are some common theories. The most common triggers point to a virus or a genetic defect, even a combination of both. Geographic studies indicate that there may be an environmental factor. Multiple Sclerosis is seen more in women than men. There are a lot of symptoms to Fibromyalgia and Multiple Sclerosis one that can affect a person’s life, his/her family, their social life, and even their job is called depression. Depression can lead to dramatic change in appetite causing a person to loose excess weight or gain excess weight. A person can fell hopeless, helplessness, worthlessness, and guilt causing a person to feel self-hate. All of these things can lead a person to thoughts of suicide or even worse cause someone to commit suicide (PubMed Health 1747) (PubMed Health 1463) (PubMed Health ). Fibromyalgia and Multiple Sclerosis both have pain associated with the diseases. These pains can be muscle twitching, muscle weakness, severe weakness in an arm or leg or both. More common pain could be tingling, crawling, or burning feeling in the arms or legs. All of these lead to muscle pain which makes it very difficult to do the daily activities. A person who has these diseases could be embarrassed by symptoms such as constipation, stool leakage and urine leakage.
