Families in Change –Movie Analysis Assignment 2 In the movie Boyz in the Hood there are two families depicted, the film tells the story of three friends: Trey, Doughboy and Ricky. Trey is living with his mother at the beginning of the film, and then his mother decides to send him to live with his father after he gets involved in a classroom fight with other student; breaking a contract that he had with his mother to behave. Trey’s mother feels that it would best that Trey’s father (Furious Styles) teach him responsibility and values that only a father can, he lives in a tough inner city neighbourhood of Los Angeles. Trey meets his two friends Ricky and Doughboy they live with their mother in the same neighbourhood. Trey’s family is a single parent family with trey’s father being the only parent in the household. Doughboy’s and Ricky’s family is also a single parent family with the mother being the parent. Trey’s father is intelligent and teachers his son a strong sense of responsibility and values. Trey grows up to become soft-spoken young man with a strong sense of loyalty to family and friends, he is ambitious and intelligent. Doughboy and Ricky mother is very tough and high-spirited. She favours Ricky over Doughboy and makes Doughboy feel like he is not good enough to be in the family. The absence of not having a father is noticeable throughout the movie. I will discuss how these two families both children having single parents and the factors that contributed to the outcome of the two families. For these two families life in the hood is a miserable situation that seems hopeless (e.g. violent crime, drugs, harassment by police etc.) In Trey’s family his father expresses feeling freely, communicates openly with his son, conflict is allowed and resolved in this family which has the characteristics of a healthy family.
