In other words, Rex cares about his kids and puts in effort to come up with these stories, just to make them happy. When parents truly love their children, they do not intentionally abuse them in any way. Only once throughout the entire memoir, had Rex abused his child and when he did, Jeannette “…expected him to turn and walk away…” (220). Jeannette expects her dad to simply walk away, implying that he has never whipped her before. Of Course the only reason that he did it was to discipline Jeannette, so he had never once took out his anger on his kids, even during his drunk rages; he cared about them
Quentin carries around a suitcase stuffed with books wherever he goes and finds excuses to get out of gym class. He is excitable and often confounds the other members and townspeople with his advanced vocabulary when jumpy. Jimmy "O'Dell" Carroll: is small and excitable, the most emotional member of the group. His father drove the town garbage truck, allowing O'Dell access to many useful items, frequently scrounged to further the group's efforts. He is always scheming ways of making money, from the failed iron scrap attempt—which took an entire summer, yielded a net loss of one dollar, not counting the destruction of borrowed equipment, and almost killed Sonny—to the profitable harvesting of ginseng.
All Chris cared about was making people laugh that was his life’s motive. He fed off of other people’s happiness even if he was miserable. Some say he may have had a form of a Somatoform Disorder or Behavioral Disorder. Chris was constantly sent down to the office for being extremely disruptive and disrespectful in class just to entertain his peers. Chris’s father never truly yelled at him for what he did just because of how cute he was as a child, Chris was usually allowed to do whatever he wanted this gave him this sense of empowerment but at the same time caused him to grow this self-independence.

He does not have the words to explain what he went through or how he feels and he tries to hide it. Norman really wants his story told, so he sent a letter to Tim O’ Brien and ask Tim to write itfor him. He believes that Tim can express how he feels or get the right words out, but the story did not satisfy Norman and he commits suicide 8 months later in the locker room of a YMCA in his hometown. Norman’s role in this book is to help Tim to go from being a storyteller, or writer, to being a soldier.

Jess isn’t safe at school, nobody wants to talk to him and he was terribly raped by school football players.
