Chapter 1 In Chapter 1 the book talks about the college experience. It goes into different details about settling into a college routine, talks about why college is important and many other new things that come with college. It explains that college isn’t all about sports and partying that as young adults we have that image of college in our head. College is another step in education, and in today’s society having a college degree is very important when trying to get a high paying job. Having a college degree makes living the American Dream a lot easier, and it helps you grow as an adult and teaches you leadership roles.
Cameron Dear Professor Varnum, I have decided upon option “A” for my paper, as I was interested in the tactics that David Foster Wallace utilized in his commencement speech. In addition, I also found his views on the true value of a college education to be very interesting and was excited to share my views as well. Please give me your feedback at your earliest convenience. Sincerely, Cameron Most college educations are what one makes of them and a college education is about more than simply earning a degree and preparing oneself for their future. A college education is about giving oneself the ability to have control over their life.
The TRIO program has done a lot for me, but the greatest thing it has done for me was encouraging me to pursue a career. TRIO has continuously supported my efforts of becoming a better person by showing me that an education for a low-income Hispanic, was not impossible. The TRIO program introduced me to informational workshops such as financial aid workshops and provided university campus tours. The TRIO program has continuously showed me that you do not have to be rich to get an education. One of the biggest concerns is that they encourage students to apply for financial aid.
Why I am in college, and my last English experiences There are many of reasons why I’m in college, and my last English experience is not what I expected it to be. Obviously everyone goes to college to get some type of degree. I’m planning on getting a bachelor’s degree in radiology and maybe extend the career on the way through the years. I’m the type of person that enjoys learning about the human body and how it works. I want to be able to have a good career and succeed in life.
Title: Making the Most Out of College: Students Speak Their Minds Author: Richard J. Light Published By: Harvard University Press, Massachusetts, England Year of Publication: 2001 SUMMARY Light’s research study examined university students throughout their college education to suggest possible changes to the education system in order to facilitate the best possible undergraduate experience. These books and scholarly journal article help establish the background of the civil rights movement and help tell who participated in this movement. This period can be a time of discovery and reflection into what type of adult one wants to become; in this I strongly agree with Zinsser. His position at the college lends to his credibility and allows him behind the scenes insight as to the pressures of college life. According to Zinsser several college Dean’s have noted the change in mindset of students from helping the world, to getting a leg up on their competition.2 I agree that restricting classes to only those applicable to a degree is a disservice to oneself because my experience doing just that and the tremendous stress of the work load confirmed it. The words of William Zinsser urged college students then and now to embrace this journey for what it is, stressful, ever changing, and savor the experience for what it can be, wonderful. Zinsser, William.
The articles, “On College Forms, a Question of Race, or Races, Can Perplex” by Susan Salney and Jacques Steinberg and “A New Kind of Affirmative Action Can Ensure Diversity” by Richard D. Kahlenberg, both discuss the college application process and how race plays into it. However, the articles come from opposite view points. Kahlenberg talks about how the government will soon take away the school’s way of “racial discrimination” however they will find new ways to continue to ensure diversity. Salney and Steinberg show the applicant’s viewpoint and their struggle to “choose” a race to better their chances of getting into a college. Both articles agree that cultural diversity in a college is important.
I have four requirements that need to be met including, 3.0 GPA or higher, 18 or higher on the ACT, 95% attendance, and a high school diploma. I support free community college because it gives opportunities, it can lower the unemployment rate, and save money. Free community college can give opportunities to lower class people who can’t afford college. If these people want to go to college, but they can’t, now they would be able to. They would be able to receive an education to help them get a job and make money.
Personal Responsibility and College Success: Taking Ownership of Your Academic Career and Your Life June 9, 2014 Personal responsibility is the ability to stand up to one’s own decisions. It means to take ownership of one's own actions, reactions and decisions, especially one as important as deciding to attend college. Though some may argue that colleges and parents ought to share the responsibility of students' college success (to include finances, time management and homework), taking personal responsibility (ownership) for individual decisions will lead to college success - and beyond - depending on particular individual values. These values – moral obligation, integrity, respect, honesty and discipline – given to themselves and the academic community will affect students' academic success. It takes responsibility to be a successful college student.
