Ingraham felt this broken system had been pushing women onto the street and into prostitution. The paper tried to place moral pressure on men, urging them to stay away from prostitutes and refrain from seeking their services. The American Female Moral Reform Society also ran "safe houses" for women who had just moved to New York. These safe houses offered shelter and training for "respectable" employment to women who had just moved to New York. The group was also involved in influencing the New York legislature to pass statutory rape laws.
If those who were in the prisons were taught reform measures and a trade they wouldn’t be brought back into the system over and over again. Another point that she makes is about how a homeless girl can be asking for a place to stay but if a policeman thinks that she is soliciting she can be arrested on prostitution charges just based off the feeling that he had, even if he is wrong. She will have no attorney or anyone to stand up for her. She will be forced to go through humiliating examinations and asked harassing questions alone. But the men that make the false accusations about the young girls are not held accountable for the lies or considered a lawbreaker.
In addition, female executives travelling alone or in the company of male associates are rare in China. This, therefore, is a key deterrent to women involvement in business since the business structure in the Chinese culture is heavily dependent on personal contacts. Furthermore, most Chinese deals are sealed in clubs and bars, which are ‘no go’ zones to women and thus further limit women participation. Moreover, it is rare to hear a report that addresses sexual harassment in Chinese companies since this will result to loosing mianzi for the family of the employee. A company that has to establish itself in China has to address the issue on sexual discrimination with adamant care.
As a result, many of these women resort to prostitution for money, and can contract the virus that way as well. For many women, especially African American women, it is difficult to find places to work when you have very little education and job experience. Many people in this situation find themselves with no other options than to either degrade themselves for money, or stealing for food, alcohol and drugs. This is very dangerous for the African American community and in a way, can be seen as a way of holding the community back and not advancing ourselves higher as a race. In a recent journal article by The New York Times, it mentions that AIDS is a huge epidemic in the African American community and is becoming more widely spread and is becoming referred to as the “black
Its against the military code of conduct to have any sexual relationship while over seas with anyone so when a women is raped most of the time the military personnel believe that it’s the women’s way of getting out of trouble for having sex since the penalty for any sexual relation ship is being demoted a rank, losing a stripe or being relocated. Since the military hospitals don’t allow abortions to be done on sight women have to travel home to have the abortion done at their expense. I find it hard to see the justice in a country where rape standards are held so high except in the military where a woman can be raped and sent home and
The only way that many women could survive was to resort to prostitution with other inmates or prison guards or officials. This was proven to be mistake after prisons became overpopulated and corrupt. Toward the late 1700s most of the crimes that where committed by women where often punished by public humiliation. More serious crimes where still where enforced by corporal punishment. If you fast forward to today women are treated better while in the system but their crimes are
The article claims that efforts targeted to catch offenders are harsh, inappropriate and a waste of time. Since neither prostitutes nor the male customers run to the police to complain about the other's conduct, police must count on trickery and deceit. For example, in some cities, laws against prostitution are converting local policemen into de facto car thieves and policewomen into masquerade prostitutes. Unfortunately, according to the article laws against prostitution bring out the worst among the nation's law-enforcement agencies. Putting prostitutes and their customers in jail will just overcrowd jails which causes hardships to many
As she is a child, she doesn’t understand everything, even when Atticus is willing to tell her what she wants. The other people around town do not tell her everything, this includes Uncle Jack. Uncle Jack deflects her questioning about prostitution, instead telling her other useless facts, thinking this will protect her. “’She asked me what a whore-lady was…’ ‘Did you tell her?’ ‘No, I told her about Lord Melbourne.’”(Chapter 9, Pg 94). Scout also does not understand the consequences of many things.
The codes also show their views on women. It appears that the Babylonian’s did not have complete disregard for a women. Several of the codes explain that if the husband were to cheat or accuse her of cheating, but she has not been “surprised”, then she is free to go, whereas in other societies, the women was always found guilty and punished in some way. The Babylonian’s also did not tolerate stealing. The punishments were more severe if stolen from a temple or court, but mostly, the person who stole must pay for the property, or be put to death.
However, there’s a few things wrong with the government’s approach. According to Louise Gerdes a published author with multiple articles in Opposing Viewpoints, there are many cases where "… sex work is often the only viable alternative for women in communities coping with poverty, unemployment … in… complete absence of social welfare programs" (Gerdes 1). If the government wants to eliminate human trafficking especially within the sex industry, then it must focus on those people as well and realize that different approaches must be used for each, “instead [of] lumping together trafficking, prostitution and commercial sex as offenses against the "moral law that stands above nations." (Gerdes 1). As stated by Thomas Melito the director of the International Affairs and Trade, the government uses estimates for data reports on a yearly scale.
