EGT1 -Economics and Global Business Task 4 Introduction China is the world’s leading nation in terms of population measure. As of the year 1990, the country had a population of 1,133,682,501 people. This has recorded continued growth of approximately 15 million people annually since then. Therefore, their government has placed a considerable amount of effort in ensuring that the Chinese population lives a better life. However, the process of ensuring this size of a population has a decent and high standard of living has posed a big challenge. This has prompted the government to develop policies that will make life easy and worth living. The Chinese are known to refer to themselves as sons of Han or just as Hans. Han represent a dynasty that has a rich and influential significance. Consequently, throughout the Chinese history, the small groups that encountered the Han Chinese ended up being absorbed in the mainstream Chinese history. Traditionally, the Chinese minority is defined as a group of people that are connected by the fact that they speak a common language; they occupy a similar region and share cultural values. However, despite being a small proportion of the total Chinese population, which is about six percent of the Chinese population, the minority have a significant meaning in the Chinese society that stretches beyond the small group (Fabbi, 2013). This is because these minority groups in China occupy strategic territories. Precisely, this minority occupies the sparsely populated frontiers of China and usually has an established relationship with the bordering countries such as North Korea, Thailand, Myanmar, Russia, Mongolia Kyrgyzstani and Kazakhstani. Therefore, it is not surprising to find extremely very few women in senior positions in many Chinese firms and organizations. This evidences the male-oriented culture as a dominant feature in China. Sexual harassment is very rampant especially against junior female employee. However, most of these offences go unpunished because females usually fear losing their jobs since it would be extremely difficult to get another job. In addition, female executives travelling alone or in the company of male associates are rare in China. This, therefore, is a key deterrent to women involvement in business since the business structure in the Chinese culture is heavily dependent on personal contacts. Furthermore, most Chinese deals are sealed in clubs and bars, which are ‘no go’ zones to women and thus further limit women participation. Moreover, it is rare to hear a report that addresses sexual harassment in Chinese companies since this will result to loosing mianzi for the family of the employee. A company that has to establish itself in China has to address the issue on sexual discrimination with adamant care.
