Throughout this essay, readers begin to think that professional writers aren't as intimidating as they seem. Most would think that professional writers are perfect from the first draft. This piece proves that everyone has a bad first draft, and stresses not to give up on writing after one horribly bad draft. Lamott uses a rhetorical sort of pathos in order to appeal to the reader. She does this by bringing readers' opinions directly into the essay.
Me Talk Pretty One Day Although language is one the basic ways human beings interact and communicate, the process of learning a new non-native language can be difficult and exhausting. In this process, the teacher has a vital role, which is why it is essential that the teacher have an appropriate attitude towards his or her students. How influential is a teacher? The way I improved my paper was taking my instructors constructive criticism and making the necessary corrections, to the best of my ability. I had obvious problems with the comma usage, dangling modifiers, and it was no question that I have to improve my vocabulary. Referring back to the text book and using the Thesaurus definitely helped me make the best revisions that I can make. The most challenging part of this assignment for me was to expand the use of my vocabulary. I know a lot of words; I just don’t use them in my everyday conversation, thus making it more difficult to incorporate in my essay.
Rebecca Laessig My Life as a Writer I don't consider myself to be the greatest writer. Keith Brandon University of Maryland College Author Note This paper was prepared for writing 101S, taught by professor Goshert-Hossain. Two writers that both grew up learning English as a second language, struggling through the hardships of the experience brought upon many differences between the two; although the same in learning each had their own views of the subject. Through their experiences there were many differences between family life, how each writer learned, and what they are doing now to understand their English as a second language. Through their experiences there were many comparisons to suggest but some stood out more than others; such as, how each writer grew up learning do deal with their family and their English, and on that note what they are doing now to understand how their English language as a second language affects others.
All of this is easily learned and understood, but when you begin to learn when to use comas, colons, and semi-colons, that is when the work becomes difficult. The boring subjects are the last issues that I have with the essays we are assigned in English classes. The subjects are almost always on some novel or a person we have read about in history. If the subjects were on something I liked, I might like English a bit more. Yet and still, I find myself writing my essays on less exciting subjects such as, “Why I hate English.” Second on my list are the thick novels I always find myself not reading.

Unit one also taught me to reevaluate how important certain priorities when it came to writing. I learned from the other unit one authors, Joseph M. Williams and James E. Porter, that when an essay is read by someone who is looking for grammatical error or plagiarism instead of content, they will often find the error and ignore the content. Although I do still know the importance of grammar and originality, this class and the grading style has let me put those constructs in the back seat until the editing process, instead of making them something I had to constantly worry about. I don’t believe that good writing revolves around grammar, but rather how well your words can convey a message to the intended audiences.

I was able to write the words and letters down with minor errors the problem was writing well enough for you to understand what I wrote. In Guyana my parents had a class called dictation; it was basically writing down what the teacher wrote on the board. This was to improve your handwriting, and because of their teachings they made me go through they’re dictation and I would just write a page out of their book and if it didn’t look good enough they would make me do it all over again. And when I would do my homework in school and my handwriting wasn’t neat they would make me redo
