Dolphus alienates himself on purpose from society, as the kids learn in their encounter. “‘Wh -- oh yes, you mean why do I pretend? Well, it’s very simple,’ he said. ‘Some folks don’t -- like the way I live. Now I could say the hell with ‘em, I don’t care if they don’t like it.
From the language and personalised tone he used in his writing, Rogers may be targeting an audience of young nerds, who are unsure of being proud of themselves. Rogers claims that nerds should embrace their nerdiness and not conform to societal stereotypes of them because of the success they will gain later in their lives. In paragraph 1, he dismisses society’s perceptions of nerds as “narrow-minded and thoughtless” and defines two key features of nerdiness as the “obsession with mastering every insane detail of their interest” and the “inability to understand… societal norms”, which nerds should embrace. He moves on to attributes that “virtually every modern blessing… originated with a nerd”, providing successful examples of nerds like Einstein and Newton in paragraph 3. Stating too their successes are acknowledged by society, who perceives them as “geniuses”, albeit only later in life.
When I was younger all I wanted to do was find some way to fit in, even though there is no point in trying and fit in when you were born to stand out and be different than everyone else. Everyone tends to adapt and conform to what other people think is cool. Sometimes it’s hard to try and stand out though because others who think they are better than you are constantly judging, even though God created everyone as equal. I myself am sometimes scared to do something outside of the “normal”. My friends are constantly asking why I care what others think and I still haven’t really figured that out yet.
Even though both Jefferson and Grant Wiggins learned a good lesson, I felt that Grant was the one that had learn much more. Jefferson was just not open to his family members and those close to him, but had either recorded or kept his feelings inside. When he actually expressed his sadness and frustration to people, I guess some people would classify that as a big lesson learned, but I think Grant went through some major change. Grant had first felt that there was no point in his lifestyle. Why was he living like this?
Tom Sawyer was able to stimulate a situation of cognitive dissonance within Ben. Tom recognized that although Ben was not partial to work and that he would want to participate in the whitewashing if he thought Tom was enjoying it or if he thought the task was of some great importance. Tom immediately recognized this and led Ben to believe that he was really enjoying whitewashing the fence and also added to the dissonance by insisting that Aunt Polly would not let just anybody do it, creating an aura of importance as to the whitewashing. The idea Tom instilled in Ben that the job Tom was doing was not only fun but was of some importance and Ben’s own idea of having fun created a state of cognitive dissonance that peaked a situation of discomfort within Ben. This dissonance or discomfort was eased for Ben when Tom agreed to let Ben participate in the (fun) and revel in the importance of the job he was doing for Aunt Polly.
Zimbardo asks why those participants who refused to go any further in their “evil deed” did not go to the aid of the “learner”? He remarks that “… even their disobedience was within the framework of acceptability” (Zimbardo 1973). Observers looking at the experiment in progress could not believe what they were seeing. Eckman proposes an answer. In modern society, people tend to obey others in authority.
He wanted to protect him from the bad influences, but he was only scared of his son’s gift because he didn’t know what it meant for him. He didn’t know that painting made Asher happy, sometimes. Growing up he began to accept it little by little. “He seemed unable to believe it. Almost despite himself, his dark eyes glittered with pride.” When he began to realize how famous and important his son was becoming he tried to accept the gift and him.
There are several studies, books, and articles that back and support my opinion and prove this to be true. Whether or not people agree with me or not, it is a proven fact in some cases. I do spank my children when I feel they have done wrong and no other punishments seem to work. I find it makes children more respectful toward their elders and mind what their parents say. I have witnessed other children who do not have proper discipline act out and embarrass their parents because they do not have anything to be afraid of or loose.
In “Salvation” Hughes saw that nothing happened to the other boy and decided to follow him and ended up feeling extremely guilty because he really didn’t see Jesus. In my past experiences I have made many decisions from feeling the pressure from my peers. I ended up regretting it and feeling guilty because the outcome didn’t turn out to be a good one. That is why instead of looking at what others do, do what you feel is right and what makes you
And they are humble because even though any person would gladly give them money to support their children, they refuse to take anything that they cannot repay. They have even begun teaching their children of this at a very early age to make sure that the whole family is in that mindset. This next piece of evidence may, on the surface, seem racially based but underneath the surface it can be related to social class as well. In the story “The Meanings of a Word” the author had offensive language used toward her. And the boy who used it most likely did so because he thought in his mind that he was somehow better than she was.
