Dana Conzo An 562-50 March 1st 2012 Maris Pacifici Abraham Ortelius, a Dutch geographer and cartographer, published this map as part of an addition-n to his famous Theatrum Orbis Terrarum atlas ("Abraham Ortelius: Maris"). This map, named Maris Pacifici was drawn in 1589 and first released to the public in 1590 ("Maris Pacifici"). Some believe that this map was based off of Mercator's world map of 1569 ("Abraham Ortelius: Maris"). Ortelius used twenty five of Bartolomeo de Lasso’s Portuguese manuscript maps and other accounts of the area as references when drawing his map ("Abraham Ortelius: Maris"). Although the map has several scale and location errors, it is a major accomplishment for the time. According to Antique MapArt, this widely accepted as the first public map of the Pacific Ocean ever cartographed ("Maris Pacifici"). Like many maps, this was a politically motivated work of art. As emphasized by “Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps”, the areas of major exploration and the beginnings of colonization by most important world powers were highlighted in this map ("Maris Pacifici"). Abraham Ortelius mother land of the Netherlands was active in the Philippines so they are a prominent feature on the map ("Maris Pacifici"). In some versions of the map, it is clear that one ship illustrated by Abraham Ortelius was the victoria, the flag ship of the famous Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan ("Maris Pacifici"). Magellan, famous for being the first to circumnavigate the globe, was instrumental in opening the world up to the areas in the Pacific Ocean.
