Gosnold, and other important men in London organized the Virginia Company of London and were granted a charter by king James 1 on April 10, 1606 to establish a colony in Virginia. In December 1606, the company dispatched three ships carrying 104 settlers, including Captain Smith, to start this colony. Established on May 13, 1607, the colony was named Jamestown, in honor of the king. It became the first English settlement in North America and first of 13 English colonies that won independence from England and became the first 13 states of the United States of America. Jamestown’s fate hung in balance, for many years, and some historians credit Jamestown’s survival on the efforts of John Smith.

In the two letters he addressed, the first letter (the letter to “Luis de Santangel”) regarding the first Voyage and the second letter (the letter to Ferdinand and Isabella) regarding the fourth Voyage I can see many similarities and differences. The letters show much similarities and differences in the description of the surroundings such as vegetation and location. But there are also major differences such as the tone set for both letters. March 16, 2011 Imperialism The topic of Imperialism is a broad one with a relatively short history in the United States. Although Imperialism is short lived within the United States it played a very important role in advancing the United States into a world power. One of the most influential figures in Imperialism was Alfred Thayer Mahan who wrote the book The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1805. This book was one of the main reasons the United States built up the navy, and one of the key reasons why the Spanish were easily beaten in the Spanish American War. The Spanish American war was one of the first major steps in American Imperialism.

The expansion was not limited to the Pacific; Puerto Rico became strategically important in the Caribbean, and plans to continue the French attempt at building a canal through Panama became a critical step in securing an efficient trade route to Asia (Herring, 2008, p. 316-320).
