Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived?” In my opinion, these are the questions that should be on the minds of every public officials and those that are in social services as well across the land. Greenleaf, stated the essence of leadership is recognizing that leaders have a moral responsibility to serve not only the needs of the organization but also the needs of their followers, customers, and society. A leader initiates, provides the ideas and the structure, and takes the risk of failure along with the chance of success. (Greenleaf, pg. 29) Let’s look at a public agency, the Department of Children’s Services, DCS.
‘The Catholic Church is driven by an understanding that each and every person is a child of God with a dignity that nothing can erase’. This statement was taken from the address of the paper ‘Confronting the Death Penalty’. This statement reasons that everyone is a child of God and no matter how bad someone may be, they will always have some good in them this good is the ‘dignity’ of a human person. Furthermore, Jesus changed the law from eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth to if someone slaps you turn the other cheek. This is stating that Catholic’s must show mercy and compassion the way which Jesus showed use mercy when he died at the cross for our
Corinthians 10:31. Christianity calls upon its followers to honor God with all of their actions. Max Webber believed that religion had a profound influence on human behavior. Webber states in his book Protestant Ethics and the Spirit
Dehumanization occurs when those who are robbed of their humanity and those who rob others of their humanity through violence, oppression, and injustice. An example of this would be the division of social classes. The upper class could be defined as the oppressor with the status of power, wealth, and knowledge contrasted to the lower class or the oppressed. The lower classes lack power and wealth but are capable of obtaining knowledge through learning. Only once that the oppressed are conscious of their position in society of being dehumanized can they understand their circumstance and fight for freedom.
His first premise is, death and suffering due to starvation and malnutrition are very bad. Famine is prominent in many third world countries, and as people living on the same planet it is horrible to know that those less fortunate do not have the amount of food needed to survive. This is a fact, not an argument. Moving on to the second premise which states, if we can prevent something bad from happening without sacrificing something of equal moral importance then we ought to do it. I previously stated death and suffering from malnutrition are bad, therefore if we can prevent famine without harming ourselves we ought to do it.
They consider how society is organised and as mentioned in the above quote look at economic, political and social issues. In later years the environment and advancement in technology and communications have become new and important issues. The thoughts expressed in Catholic Social teaching consist of ‘a set of principles and guidelines which have emerged over the centuries as Christians tried to work out in practice how best to put into practice the virtues of love, justice and solidarity.’ They present not only a vision of a just society, but also suggest ways in which a just society can be achieved. The values and principles expressed in Catholic Social Teaching are grounded in Christian scripture and the Church’s lived tradition. The Modern era of Catholic Social Teaching begins with Rerum Novarum.
A culture is a set of norms, values, beliefs and goals shared by the members of society, whereby value consensus is the glue that holds the society together. Durkheim is also supporting this basis of idea when he states that that a greater level of happiness and progress in the society can be achieved if people work together rather than competing with each other like animals in a war of all against scarce resources. In his work, he also stated that humans have unlimited desires and there has to be a basic agreement on values. The basic function of consensus is to make social order possible by integrating individuals into social system and direct them to meet the system’s need. Everybody has to internalize their roles and the social order depends on how people play their own roles.
They are both structuralist theories, the individual is viewed with less importance than the social structure or organisation of society. Functionalists see society as being made up of interdependent sections, which will work together to fulfil the functions necessary for the survival of society as a whole. They see shared norms and values as being fundamental to society. Functionalists believe that society can be compared to a living organism, in a way that all interdependent parts (organs) must function together in order for the greater society/body to function. Functionalists see society as a group of institutions.
For the social significance; establish a caring community to help volunteers understand better the community. Volunteer service is to express love, caring, sharing positive action. It is not only promoting mutual assistance also among people care more for social harmony at all levels. Through volunteer activities, raise public awareness for the responsibility to everyone in the society. And cultivate a sense of belonging to society, civic responsibility, dedication and contribution to society.
Moyo is not alone with her criticism of aid and the demand to stop it. However, she tries to prove that aid for Africa has not only been useless, but destructive: it makes the poor poorer and growth slower; aid is a political, economic and humanitarian disaster.
