Vlad Dovgan Ms. Bulla English AP Lit/Comp Period 8 3/3/13 Looking at the World through Larry’s Eyes Throughout my young life, I’ve been exposed to various situations where people have decided to violate social codes and ethics that were put in place to prevent chaos. In fact, I can think all the way back to my elementary school days when this betrayal of social norms became evident to me. I’m sure everyone can remember certain classmates who thought they were “slick Ricks” and cut the lunch line. Sure, everyone has probably done it themselves, but that sleazy move done in the early stages of one’s schooling career has the potential to affect how people will interact in their futures. Perhaps my own personal opinion on the matter is why I fell in love with the show Curb Your Enthusiasm. In the show, Larry David (starring as himself), finds himself in several awkward situations because he follows a certain code of ethics and principles and challenges anyone who defies them. Larry may act stubbornly to prove his point, which causes the people he is confronting to react in an angry way, but his social codes are generally accepted by the show’s viewers as people tend to find that they could easily relate to them. For me, and several other fanatics of the show, Larry is brave for standing up for his beliefs. People wish they could be more like him, fearless to challenge those they feel act wrongly. Personally, when I witness behavior that defies social norms, I think to myself “what would Larry David do”? That is because when it comes to social norms, Larry David is the perfect man to expose why it is important not to break them. A typical person who hasn’t been exposed to Larry David’s ideology may not think much of the young, naïve line cutters from 1st grade. However, the episode “Vow of Silence” shows exactly why those line cutters should not be given
