He was the most important person that led Emily’s behavior and made her act the way she did. Even when her father had died, Emily was still under his control. Because of the pressure that Emily’s father put on her, Emily’s mind and even her actions became very strange and altered. Emily’s father not only controlled her actions and how she felt about things, but he also affected her love and relationships with other men. Her father had said, “None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such.” (364) Her father never allowed her to make her own decisions even when she was almost 30 years old.
Women’s Roles in Society In the 16th and 17th centuries the history of literature has been extremely devoted to producing male-centric pieces, which then leave women as merely side characters. Britain was patriarchal based society, where men were seen as the decision makers. This refers to the expectation that men are to take the primary responsibility for their jobs, communities and family. In societies women are interpreted by the men’s actions and the world they establish around them. Women barely had any rights and they were not allowed to have any property.
Colby's friends had been warning him for some time that they did not like the way Colby had been behaving. But after Colby did something, his friends decided that he should be hanged. They tried to rationalize their decision by saying that they, ".... had a perfect moral right to do so because he was our friend, belonged to us in various important senses, and he had after all gone too far." (Barthelme, 1973, pg. 194) His friends would not listen to Colby's argument that, "Going too far was something everybody did sometimes."
They do not have the right to vote, make their own decisions, and they definitely cannot voice their individual opinions in society. Even the father of Pakistani girls believes that their daughters are nothing more than a future “breeding tool. The role of these young girls once married is to produce as many males as their body will allow. That way, the women in Pakistan grow up with the mentality that they are just the backstage crew in the production of life. Sadly, it seems that the women in Pakistan honestly believe that they are below the men in their country because they continue to allow this behavior to continue, without revolutionizing like the women in many other countries, including the US, once did.
Emily’s father was a strict man who was very set in his ways. He believed in the traditional life-style of the south and considered his family better than others. His philosophy was that Emily should not be associating with such common folk of a different social stature. “We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her, as people will” (3). He was not able to come to terms with himself that the times were changing, and in turn, Emily was shunned away from the more modern generation of people her own age.
The Church felt this way because they blame Eve for the failure of mankind and viewed all women to be an advocate of the devil. (Hollister) Women were allowed to work, but they were definitely not equal in the work force because they represented a large source of cheap labor in that time period; the same can be said for today with the exception of minimum wage. Most writings of the Arthurian period were about the king and his knights’ triumphant battles. Women were minor characters, if they were included at all. They were not mentioned except at the end of a battle, when the
The Women’s Right Movement changed the lives of the American Women for the better, due to gaining the right to vote, access to higher education, and the opportunity to enter the workforce. Before the reform movements of Women’s right, the American women were discriminated in society, home life, education, and the workforce. Women in the 1800s could not only vote, but they also were forbidden to speak in public. They were voiceless and had no self-confidence, they dependent men, since they had little to no rights (Bonnie and Ruthsdotter). Before the reform movement, the American Women were voiceless, they had no say in society, however the reform movement will soon change that.
They were supposed to meet the social conventions they were given and excluded from the many rights that the male have. 1.1 Significance of the Issue For a very long time, the compilation of the history bears a big attention on the male, while ignoring the female world and their living conditions. Throughout the human history, women are basically excluded from the political, economic, military, law, art and other fields. The writing of this history that has ignored the role of the movements of the female is of great one-sidedness. Women are not only the creators of the material wealth of society, but also the important force to promote social progress and change.
People conform to the ideals that surround them to be accepted by the herd, but almost as equally destructive is the general fear of speaking out even when you know something’s wrong; to let your voice be heard despite the savage contesters. This is where humanity went wrong. We all hold the choice in our hands to dig ourselves out of this quickly sinking grave, but so far no one has chosen that path. We could turn off the TV, burn the tabloids, and put away the goofy trends. Thoreau once wrote, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation”, and he was right.
The masculinity possessed by men became less emphasized and the typical stereotypes about women that they can only do the household jobs were proven wrong. During the world war, men left their jobs in order to serve their nation. Therefore the lack of male workers provided vast range of opportunities for female to work outside and replace men in their jobs. In fact it was the very first time where female actually got an experience of pursuing their career outside the house and pushing the boundaries of what a role of female could
