Long Lasting Relationships
The one thing that human beings have in common with all other human beings is the desire to be happy about self and life. Majority of happiness is determined by relationships with other people. It is how well people get along with others that will determine level of happiness and satisfaction in life more than anything else. Accomplishing material goals without any regards to relationships, a person will end up empty, alone and miserable.
Many people look to having a “perfect” relationship, a relationship that creates long lasting happiness and love. But many people do not realize to create such happiness requires work. Relationships can be one of the best supports in life. A good relationship can strengthen health, mind, and connections with others. Relationships are investments; you get back what you put in multiplied.
No relationship is the same. People come together for many different reasons. But all require similar work. There are basic guidelines to make a relationship meaningful, fulfilling and exciting in both happy times and sad.
Beverly and Jon Meyerson , in an article in Social Work Today, “What Couples Need in Therapy – 8 Proven Steps to Lasting Love” (2013) explains that if couples go through a step by step process of overcoming conflict, they can have a long lasting, joyful relationship. The Meyerson’s supports their claims by providing eight required steps to have a lasting relationship: Appreciation, Accepting Each Other’s Perspective and Feelings, Supporting Each Other When Relatives Interfere, Togetherness, Physical Intimacy, Accepting Each Other’s Different Values, Accepting and Being Grateful for Character Differences, and an Equal Partnership.
