1. In your opinion, who or what is ultimately responsible for the destruction of Dez, and why? Explain. In my opinion, Dez’s mom is ultimately responsible. Dez is still under the age of 12 when the events of this film occur making Dez a very young and impressionable boy. Without having a fit parental figure in his life he wasn’t able to figure out what the right path for him was. If Dez’s mother was fit she would have cared when Dez came home at night, wouldn’t be grateful for the “gifts” that Dez gave her, and would do more for Dez than just giving him a place to live. If Dez’s mom wanted what was best for him, she should have given him up long before she did which would’ve allowed Dez to grow up with people who would lead him to make right choices. 2. Explain 5 ways in which the “society” or the ‘institutional system’ let him down? Many people in the community let Dez down. The policemen were so tired of Dez’s crimes that they reached the point where they wanted him to be punished severely and couldn’t wait til he turned 12 so that could happen (Young Offenders Act, 1984). Dez relied on his new friend, Cory, to stay by his side but when Cory saw how dangerous Dez was during a shooting incident, he left him alone. Dez’s other so-called “friends” were just people who hanged out with him because he had control over them; they never really supported him. Even the school teachers let him down as they all gave up on trying to help Dez and always thought he shouldn’t have been in the school. The last major person who let Dez down was his only family, his mother. His mother told him she loved him and thought she was the last person who actually wanted for him. However, when he came to visit her from his escape from the evaluation centre, she didn’t seem to care. 3. In your opinion, when should a child become responsible for his or her behaviour, and why?
