Linguistic Analysis of an English Language Learner Galen University Introduction Background Information Diana is a 13-year-old female. She was born on August 31, 2000 at San Ignacio Town, Cayo District, Belize. The official language of Belize is English, but in Benque Viejo, a Mestizo community, almost everyone speaks Spanish as a means of communication. English is spoken only at class time. Benque Viejo Town is the west-most town in Belize bordering Guatemala. Although Diana was born at San Ignacio Town, due to the lack of health services offered at the town, she has always lived in Benque Viejo and has no intentions of relocating elsewhere as her relatives from her mother’s side all live in this town. Diana is a recent graduate of Howard Smith Nazarene Primary School and is in transition to attend Mopan Technical High School. Family Information Diana lives with both of her parents. She is the second to last child out of six children mostly males. Her father is a nationalized Belizean originally born in Guatemala and works in Belize City as a maintenance person in a well-recognized Hardware Store. Her mother is a common household who stays at home to do the cleaning and cooking. The family always speaks Spanish at home and the only time they speak English is when the occasion calls for it. The father is very limited in conversational English and often uses inappropriate Spanish cognates and at times inserts Creole words when speaking English. Diana’s mother is a grade six school dropout and refuses to speak English, but when the occasion warrant it, her conversation is somewhat limited due to inadequate vocabulary. Although Diana’s mother claims that she understands more of what she speaks, she has great difficulty following what is being said and only comprehends “social conversation” spoken slowly and with frequent repetition.
