Symone Jackson September 6, 2012 English 1001 Lingua Franchise In the article, Lingua Franchise, Charles Foran shares his experiences and knowledge on foreign tongues and how English is incorporated into other languages. Foran concludes that though there has been a ‘tidal wave’ of English among the globe, it is not putting any major languages to rest and that other countries are receptive to integrating English into their own language. The intended audience seems to be those who believe that English is dominating other languages into extinction. The author’s purpose is stated in a ‘matter-of-fact’ tone which attempts to convince readers that the wide spread use of English is harmless. The genre of the article is informative with examples from the author’s own experiences. Foran writes, “ If Asians are threatened by the growing presence of English, they are expressing their fear in the strangest mannor…inviting the danger into their homes.” This sentence is a powerful statement that aids his argument because even if English was endangering other Asian languages, the people who incorporate English into their language aren’t resistant to this integration. Charles Foran’s angle of vision is one that minimizes the expansion of English and denounces any argument that calls this expansion dangerous to other cultures. This subject is one that can be seen from both sides of the fence.
