How many times have we fantasized about having a perfect life, and in that fantasy, we dreamt that we are extremely happy living that life? The beatitudes teach us basic life skills about how we should act towards one another, encouraging us to treat others with respect, compassion, generosity and justice. If we succeed and live the way Jesus showed us to, which is by showing the values of the beatitudes, we will be rewarded in heaven and will live for eternity with God. The statement, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” basically means standing up for what you believe in, what you know is right and facing the consequences with the choices you decide to take forward. It is about fighting for what is good and what is going to make this world better. If we are able to do this, God will take note of our faithfulness by rewarding us with eternal life with him in heaven.
