Ignoring the reality of everyday life and how it works can obsure individuals perspective of the world, which has devastating effects, such as not being able to understand what it best for ones self in life. In ‘Paul’s Case’ by Willa Cather, the protagonist, Paul, experiences these devastating effects. In order to escape the misery of his everyday life, Paul ignores reality and devises an affluent life for himself, however it is these illogical measures that ultimately cause him to make irrational and harsh decisions that prevent him from securing self-fulfillment. The upper and ruling class used power to make them superior to theses who they thought were beneath them, who were the middle class but note specifically the poor. They made they poor and middle class pay taxes to them which in turn made the upper class wealthy. They are sick of the mounting pressures put upon them; sick of working long hours for little pay, sick of obeying the law when the law is nowhere to be seen for them when they may need it the most. Yet, step outside the barriers of society and one is looked upon as strange, as someone not to be trusted and looked upon with suspicion. Those who are on the fringes of society, those who live by their own rules and regulations, need no government to govern them. They are their own law, and so their minds are free to discover other things. Indeed, they receive their education by experiencing life.
So because of this rudeness it makes the Duvich family feel unwanted. So in order to have freedom you must be accepted. Lastly, to be free you must feel accepted. Since the Duvich family is marked as “untouchable” they are unable to do what they wish peacefully. “But the Duvitches were marked people.” (3) This prevented them to do what they wished peacefully because where ever they went they would be harassed by the town folk.
We often find ourselves criticizing the way a message is presented and ignoring its content or value. We don’t like the message being “read” to us, we find the speaker lacking in experience, or we don’t care for the negative tone of the boss. Our listening focuses on delivery and approach.
These labels that are constantly put on us drive me insane. There is so much hidden in our family that non-members do not see. In addition to all of these stereotypes that are put on me and the others in my group, I do not like to show people that it bothers me, but these stereotypes have really given me a negative outlook on these people. The stereotypes that have been put on me have made me put stereotypes back on these other people. I now look at the outsiders as "city slickers" or I call them lazy and tell them that they have no discipline.
