Life in the Middle Ages Was Harsh

‘The woman is subject to man on account of the weakness of the nature.’ – St. Agustine. This saying is proven to be correct as the women were given the same brutal punishments as the men were. This made it difficult for women as they did not have any choice but to be brutally hurt like the men. Not only this, but the peasant women of the Middle Ages treated as toys which you could trade with other families. The noble women didn’t have life any easier, though they were considered lucky compared to the peasants. For these reasons, life was harsh in the middle especially for the women. Harsh punishments were given to all who did not follow the rules given out by the men of the society. The women of the medieval times were in danger the most as they were treated harshly by the society. The women had no choice but to be punished the same way as men were; brutally. This involved being beaten, burned alive, and the women specially, drowning for committing adultery. The men sent to drown these women had been practising how to do so and this was a very common practise that would occur. There were torture devices that were used specially for women such as the ‘Breast Ripper’ also known as ‘Spider’. As the name suggests, the female’s breasts were ripped off by using claws which either would be heated or used cold. This torture device was used for women who had been accused of spreading gossip, committing blasphemy, being adulterous or carrying out abortion. This device could also be used to get confessions regarding these accusations. There were many other cruel and disgusting torture devices used specifically for women such as the ‘Ducking Stool’. For these reasons life in the Middle Ages was harsh as there were severe punishments for the littlest offences women were accused of attempting.
